General Description
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Engineering, the Grounds Personnel will perform general maintenance of the college grounds including lawn care, landscaping, trash pickup and snow removal. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Engineering, the Grounds Personnel will work independently to perform a wide range of landscape maintenance duties, working safely with gas- and diesel-powered equipment including mowers, tractors, chainsaws etc., and attending to plants, trees and lawns on all campuses.
Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities

· Performs general grounds maintenance such as cutting grass, trimming and pruning trees and shrubs.

· Ability to safely and effectively operate heavy machinery such as forklifts, tractors, mowers, front end loaders, trailers, water tanks, stake trucks, dump trucks, and pickup trucks.

· Assists with landscaping tasks such as planting bushes, shrubs, and trees; weeding of newly landscaped areas; and spreading of landscaping of materials such as bark or rocks. Perform minor repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment utilized in groundskeeping.

· Empties campus trash containers; rakes and disposes of leaves and debris from college campuses.

· Removes snow and ice from the campuses and spreads salt during the winter months.

· May be required to perform the duties of the Mechanic Helper as required by the administration to meet the needs of the college.

· Occasionally, moves or transports goods such as furniture.

· Sweeps walkway of debris.

· Cuts down tree limbs that are posing a danger.

· Trims shrubs and pull weeds.

· Installs and cleans lawn furniture.

· Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Engineering.
Education Requirements
High school diploma or GED required
Experience
· A minimum three years related groundskeeping experience preferred.
Competencies and Skills Required
· Ability to operate heavy equipment.
· Ability to do minor repairs on mechanical equipment.
· Ability to work independently to perform assigned duties.
· Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting and moving up to 50 pounds.
· Valid driver’s license
Physical Demands and Work Environment

· This position’s duties are normally performed in an outside work environment, based on the activity scheduled.
· Works inside and outside and may be exposed to extreme temperatures.
· Exposed to dirt and disagreeable odors, and possible skin irritations from cleaning chemicals and solutions.
· Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
· Care is required when working from ladders to prevent injury.
· Travel to all campuses required.
Salary $39,755

Terms of Employment
Full Time. Flexible schedule to meet department needs. Some evening, weekends, and extended hours will be required. Ability to travel to and work at the Cranford, Elizabeth, Plainfield, and Scotch Plains campuses. Must obtain a defensive driving certificate within 3-months of employment. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to be on call for special events. Employee must establish primary residency in New Jersey within one year of appointment unless an exemption applies.
