Job Summary

Reporting to the EWU Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, the Director-EWU Multicultural Center is responsible for leading and managing Eastern Washington University’s first Multicultural Center. Working collaboratively with individuals and groups throughout the university and the external community, the Director will design and facilitate programs and foster communications that:

• support the university’s diversity and inclusion initiatives by facilitating students’ engagement with and integration into the university community;

• promote the recruitment, retention, and social and academic success of students from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, faiths, abilities, and identities; and

• foster an affirming and supportive environment for EWU students with multiple personal identifications (e.g., race/ethnicity, class, age, religion, nationality, ability, and other identities). 

Building collaborative internal and external relationships, the Multicultural Center Director will oversee the Center’s involvement in campus, local, and regional activities that help to create an environment of affirmation and support for EWU students and that contribute to overall climate cultural competence. This individual will mentor students as needed and refer students to appropriate on- and off-campus resources as needed. 

The Multicultural Center Director will select, train, and supervise professional and student staff. Working closely with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Marketing/Communications, this individual will manage Multicultural Center communications, social media, and publications as well as regular communication with the campus and external organizations.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.

• Three years of professional experience in college student development or student affairs, student counseling, campus recreation, higher education administration, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

• Welcoming and approachable professional with skills in engaging a diverse student body, as well as a variety of campus constituents.

• Knowledge of multiculturalism, and demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations.

• Experience building community and collaboration with internal and external partners.

• Demonstrated experience advising, mentoring, or counseling students in a higher education environment.

• Experience in budget management.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Event planning and facilitation experience.

• Demonstrated skills in problem solving and conflict resolution.

• Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse groups of students, staff, and community members in a college or university setting.

• Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in higher education administration, student development, counseling, or a related field.

• Five years of progressively-responsible professional experience in college student development or student affairs, student counseling, campus recreation, higher education administration, or a related field—or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

• Demonstrated leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives.

• Demonstrated experience using technology and social media (website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

• Demonstrated experience in program development and assessment.

• Experience creating promotional and/or marketing materials.

This position typically works Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Due to programming, the position may be required to work some evenings and weekends.
