General Description
The Student Services Specialist for Distance Education offers advising to students enrolled in fully online programs seeking academic, career, or transfer guidance.. The Specialist develops online programs, events, and student success workshops.. Through and intentional outreach, the Student Services Specialist assists students with the registration process and academic degree planning, and proactively connects students to remote support services.
Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities

Provides academic, career, and transfer advising for students enrolled in fully online degree programs

Supports career development including values clarification and other strategies which support professional growth.

Collaborates with Student Development and Academic Affairs to facilitate student success.

Develops and facilitates orientation for students enrolled in fully online programs and student success workshops; collects and assesses data for online student cohorts; and recommends modifications to existing services based on outcomes.

Utilizes student retention software and tools to monitor student academic progress

Develops and implements online student retention strategies based on best practices for online learning.

Prepares weekly and annual reports

Serves on ad hoc committees as required.

Monitors online program enrollment for course needs

Maintains data regarding services and key performance indicators


Performs related responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or designee.


Education Requirements
• Master’s Degree is required.
Experience
Two (2) years’ experience in college academic advising or equivalent preferred.
Competencies and Skills Required
· Must possess strong interpersonal skills to interact tactfully and courteously with students, the general public, faculty, and other staff members.

· Must be a “quick study” in order to grasp knowledge of policies and procedures relating to every aspect of student services that a prospective or current student may utilize.

· Analytical and problem-solving skills

· Ability to take required initiative to solve problems

· Ability to collaborate with others

· Commitment to supporting a diverse student population

· Ability to maintain a variety of academic software tools (e.g., Canvas, Dropout Detective, Advise, Excel, Proctor track, Respondus Lockdown Browser)
Physical Demands and Work Environment
· This position’s duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.
· Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
· No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
· Some travel required.
