Position Summary/Essential Duties:

The Instrument Coordinator Specialist role is responsible for the acquisition of surgical instrumentation through obtaining quotes, placing orders, receiving shipments, and allocating resources.

  • Positive relationships with customers, sales representatives and professional staff (i.e. physicians and nurses).  Positive relationships with coworkers. 
  • Responsible for self-development and committed to mission of UHCMC. 
  • Work closely with Perioperative Service Leaders, surgeons and administrative staff in the acquisition of surgical instrumentation through obtaining quotes, placing orders and receiving shipments. 
  • Comply with group purchasing agreements (Surpass).
  • Build/maintain electronic instrument count sheets. 
  • Communicate and update changes in contents of instrument trays and assure reprocessing personnel have adequate instruments available to make tray content changes. 
  • Provides training, orientation and ongoing in-service to staff in the principles and practices of sterilization and aseptic techniques and in the use and care of new and/or specialized equipment; demonstrates sound leadership, interpersonal, customer service, work prioritization skills, and job-specific troubleshooting skills
  • Maintains and monitors a system for routine ordering, tracking of back orders and identification of appropriate substitutes; plans, organizes and supervises the daily, monthly and annual inventory system; orders and tracks rental equipment for routine and emergency procedures
  • Assumes responsibility, in collaboration with CSP supervisor and CSP manager, for scheduling new UH CSP employee orientation, on-the-job training, in-service education and UH CSP Instrument Processing or facility quality assurance programs when needed.
  • Review manufacture recommendations for reprocessing of instrumentation before acquisition (e.g. does facility have the capability to reprocess). 
  • Assist in the writing of new instrument processing competencies. Manage/coordinate the instrument repair process.  Assist in maintaining a million dollar instrument budget.
  • Control equipment repairs and preventive maintenance for the Perioperative suite.

Education:

High school diploma / GED or equivalent.

Graduate of a Sterile Processing or Surgical Technician program preferred.

Required Credentials, License, and / or Certifications:

National or International Sterile Processing Certification required

Central Service Certification required.

 

Experience & Knowledge:

5 years of previous hospital central service instrument experience or Surgical Technologist experience required

Experience with online purchasing in a professional setting.

Extensive knowledge of surgical instrumentation, instrument reprocessing and supply chain practices. 

Basic medical terminology required.

 

Special Skills & Equipment Knowledge:

Preferred:  Steam, EtO, Plasma, Peracetic Acid, Dry Heat, and liquid sterilants.

Knowledge of:  Equipment, sterilizers, washers, instruments, and tray assembly.

Special Skills: Good manual dexterity, attention to details

Skilled in Microsoft Office.
