Summary

King County Department of Information Technology (KCIT) is hiring Electronic Communications Technician I's who will perform highly skilled technical work as an expert in land mobile radio systems and subscriber equipment.
 
As a part of the Puget Sound Emergency Radio Network (PSERN) the Electronic Communications Technician I's will participate in, and represent PSERN during the Project’s coverage testing phase as well as overseeing and provide quality assurance for the programming, installation of mobile, control stations and portable two-way radios. Working Conditions
This position will be approximately 85% in the field and 15% in the office.
 

Teleworking Requirement 
The work associated with this position will be performed through a combination of field work complemented with teleworking. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
 
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations. King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.

This position is estimated for a duration of 2 years.

Work Schedule 
The normal workweek for this position is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Alternative work schedules may be considered, after probation. This position is eligible for overtime pay.

Job Duties

  • Participate and represent the PSERN project during the BER and DAQ coverage testing process
  • Oversee the installation and provisioning of PSERN mobile radios, portable radios, control    station radios
  • Assist Electronic Communications Specialist as needed
  • Provide Tier 1 troubleshooting and maintenance of HVAC, Generator, Fire Suppression, and power systems, and tower lighting at radio sites.  

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of installation and basic 2-way mobile radio maintenance practices
  • Knowledge of basic electronics, communications equipment and auxiliary equipment
  • Capable of using basic electronic test equipment (DVM, watt-meter, service monitor) to determine failure location
  • Excellent customer service skills, including maintaining focus on the customer
  • Proficient in using computers and computer software to perform diagnostics, interpret results, program equipment, and maintain equipment and system databases
  •  Able to work independently and in a team environment
  • Demonstrated skills in creating, cultivating, and collaborating with management, peers, cross functionally, and customers
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; including the ability to communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audience
  • Skill in handling multiple competing priorities and adapting to changes in workload; including writing and editing technical documentation and staying current with assigned work
  • Positive attitude towards peers and leadership, ability to learn from mistakes, and proactively seeks feedback
  • Ability to focus on the details and approach problems logically and rationally
  • Demonstrated ownership of tasks to resolve challenging customer issues, escalating when necessary
  • Effective problem solving skills including decision making, time management & immediate prioritization of tasks as assigned
  • Candidates must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license (or obtain one within 30 days of hire), have a good driving record and the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles 
  • Candidates must be able to lift up to 75 lbs as needed with reasonable accommodations
 DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2+ years of experience installing and maintaining land mobile radio equipment and related auxiliary systems
  • Successful completion of an AA degree, vocational training program in electronics, and/or equivalent military electronics training involving communications equipment, analog and digital circuitry, and test equipment usage.
  • Experience in the use of Office 365 products
  • Prior experience with HVAC, Generator, Fire Suppression, and power systems, and tower lighting at radio sites
