Gettysburg Municipal Authority is seeking a Full-Time Wastewater Treatment Operator.

This position works under the supervision of the Wastewater treatment Supervisor. Position will assist in all phases and related duties to ensure the safe and efficient operations and maintenance of a 3.0 MGD Activated sludge/extended aeration / SBR wastewater plant, .232 MGD SBR satellite wastewater plant and 7 lift stations throughout the collection system. Preferred by not required is a current PA DEP Wastewater Operations license Class B including Sub Class 1 with the ability or desire to obtain required operator’s license. Knowledge of maintenance, electrical, instrumentation, and process control skills are a plus. The applicant should possess a valid PA driver’s license; computer skills with knowledge of Word and Excel with the ability to learn internal software programs. 

Applicant must also possess the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds, perform work in all weather conditions, provide stable employment, attendance, and pass a complete background investigation (including references, employment, criminal, driving, and pre-employment drug screening test). Weekends and holiday work as needed, as well as emergency callouts with a response time of less than one hour.

Wastewater Operator

This is unskilled to semi-skilled, technical work in the operation and maintenance of GMA’s wastewater treatment facilities. Work is full time and may vary including evenings and weekends. 

An employee in this class may perform a variety of duties requiring strenuous physical effort and exposure to uncomfortable working conditions. Examples of job responsibilities include wastewater treatment plant operation, wastewater sample collection and testing, equipment, and plant maintenance, including but not limited to painting, cleaning, hosing of basins, tanks, etc.

This position is full time work (40 hours per week) with benefits as outlined in the GMA’s Policy Manual. Work may be performed during regular business hours, and/or at all other times as may be necessary to ensure the safety and quality of GMA’s potable wastewater supply.

Work is performed under the direction of the Wastewater Operations Supervisor.

DUTIES:

Assist Licensed Wastewater Workers as needed.
Take necessary training courses needed to obtain appropriate State Operator Certification.
Train for and be capable of performing the following duties within 18 months of this classification:
Operation of GMA’s wastewater system, including all equipment associated with the wastewater treatment plants (valves, pumps, chemical addition, operation of equipment, and interpretation of charts, gauges, and meters).
Maintenance of all records required to ensure GMA’s compliance with state and federal regulations.
Maintenance of pumps and motors, plant operating equipment, and laboratory equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
General cleanup and maintenance of plant, operating equipment, and laboratory equipment.  Cleanup duties include sweeping, moping and snow removal as needed.
Follow safety procedures and OSHA safety standards relating to all duties of Wastewater Operators, using appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment as required for the job.
Keep supervisor informed regarding plant operations and/or problems.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and basic algebra.
Basic computer hardware and software knowledge and skill.
Mechanical aptitude with knowledge of hand tools, plumbing procedures, and construction tools.
Capable of medium to heavy physical work including lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and reaching.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and to make minor decisions as determined by the Wastewater Operations Supervisor.
Knowledgeable with all of following within 18 months of this classification:
State and federal regulations and reporting requirements.
Safety procedures and OSHA safety standards relating to all duties of Wastewater Operators.
Piping, control systems, chemistry, and bacteriology as related to GMA’s wastewater system.
Submit to pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as well as a willingness to submit to periodic, random drug and alcohol testing.
No record of convictions or ARD dispositions for driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
No record of felony conviction, and a willingness to submit to a criminal background investigation.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license.
