Job Description

This position is part of the Virginia Tech Shorebird Program, and is related to a long-term analysis of piping plover demography. The project has been collecting a large volume of data since 2005, and this position will aid the Primary Investigators and graduate students in maintaining and analyzing this data.
Duties include, but are not limited to: analyzing data, producing datasets, maintaining a large, multi-year database, QA/QC procedures with large volumes of data, presenting the results, writing publications, communicating with volunteers and other researchers, and periodic fieldwork.

Required Qualifications

Previous experience handling and banding Piping Plovers and other birds, resighting color banded birds, and conducting piping plover predator surveys. At least two years’ experience working on Fire Island, NY. Previous experience MS ACCESS.  Experience with ArcGIS. Experience operating 4WD vehicles, ATV’s, and boats; a valid driver’s license. Experience coordinating crews in the collection of demographic data and coordinating with one or more federal or state land management agencies. Experience camera trapping avian and mammalian wildlife. Experience with shorebird and carnivore field data collection. Excellent organization and communication skills; demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively; successful applicants will be adaptable, detail-oriented, enthusiastic, and motivated to produce published scientific reports and literature.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in wildlife science or related field; experience working on the U.S. Atlantic coast.
