DEFINITION The Val Verde Unified School District is a medium size district in southern California with an ADA of ~19,800 students. The IT department is an integral part of providing a modern and high quality technology environment for the district. The IT department consists of 15 personnel that provide equipment and services to staff and students including network infrastructure, desktops, laptops and tablet devices, virtualized servers, custom databases, software, training and support. The department prides itself on working as a team sharing ideas, fostering innovation, building great solutions and providing the best service possible. Under the direction and supervision of the Application Services Manager the Database Engineer II will be responsible for working with colleagues to develop, modify and maintain software/database solutions to best align district resources to the district mission. The position entails performing related tasks and duties as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES 1. Write, test and maintain both new and existing district applications for use on desktops, web browsers or mobile devices. 2. Design, optimize and maintain district databases for quality, performance and stability. 3. Regularly assess current systems to determine usefulness, quality and recommend updates or identify alternative solutions. 4. Share knowledge and work with colleagues to maintain current best practices in the development and maintenance of district software and databases. 5. Work with colleagues to migrate older Access databases to web-based solutions. 6. Use ESRI GIS software to update and report geographic data on maps related to school boundaries. 7. Analyze and present data in an intuitive and meaningful way such as through reports, spreadsheets and maps. 8. Work with Network Services staff to optimize district web, file or database servers for quality, performance and stability. 9. Provide support to district staff utilizing software/databases maintained by the Application Services department. 10. Other duties as assigned. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Knowledge of: Current development languages including, Microsoft C#, Microsoft Visual Basic, HTML, CSS and jQuery Microsoft Access database development including table structure, queries, macros and reporting. Modern application processes including workflow, database integration, data validation and role based security. Current database practices including database normalization, relationships, indexes, stored procedures and views. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 administration and development using T-SQL and SQL Server Management Studio. Current development tools including Visual Studio. Knowledge of the following is a plus: Educational database systems such as Eagle Software Aeries CS, Aeries.Net, Follett Destiny library system and/or Blue Bear Microsoft Entity Framework, Microsoft ASP.Net and Microsoft ASP.Net and AJAX. Related Microsoft SQL Server Services such as Reporting, Integration, Analysis, Data Quality and Master Data Services. Microsoft IIS administration Integration with Active Directory ESRI ArcGIS software Ability to: Establish and maintain effective communication with administrators and District site personnel Work independently and exercise good judgment Communicate effectively using both written and oral forms
