Job Description

Job Summary

Manages the planning, implementation, and monitoring of financial and quality standards of the laboratory. Establishes and maintains laboratory service plans, policies, and procedures. Develops short and long-term goals and strategies. Provides feedback, implements, and maintains the annual operating budget. Provides overall direction for billing and coding compliance. Keeps new and revised regulatory and compliance policies/procedures in place to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements. Interacts and consults with physicians and clinical employees regarding compliance and laboratory testing. Engages in administrative functions such as equipment and vendor evaluation and contract reviews. Maintains a presence in the regional hospital laboratory network. Markets laboratory and pathology services. Participates in hiring of employees. Leads, mentors, and develops employees. Works cooperatively with other departments and disciplines to facilitate multi-discipline to facilitate multi-disciplinary, patient centered care.

Essential Functions

  • Manages laboratory services to ensure that services are provided in accordance with state and federal regulations, organizational policy, and accreditation/compliance requirements.
  • Communicates with employees in regular meetings. Disciplines employees consistently, fairly, and effectively.
  • Develops and maintains the statistical databased of all critical business information. Creates and maintains key performance indicators of departmental success. Performs financial analysis for critical business activities. Monitors productivity trends in the department. Operates within the FTE and expense budget, understanding variances and justifying them when requested. Develops and implements strategic planning for the department, departmental service, and client service satisfaction.
  • Ensures that processes and services are continuously monitored for quality, cost effectiveness, and efficiency. Engages in process and quality improvement activities. Makes and implements recommendations to improve operational efficiency and to implement new services for the laboratory. Monitors all quality control procedures pertaining to laboratory testing. Designs and monitors quality control programs and performance compliance reporting.
  • Performs such individual assignments as management may direct. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships within the organization. Provides information to senior levels of management on the implication of policies and procedures being formulated and recommends specific action.
  • Engages in continuous study of the entire professional field, including best practices, to maintain the professional competence, knowledge, and skills necessary for the satisfactory performance of all assigned responsibilities. Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Maintains professional and regulatory knowledge. Assures standards are met and documented. Participates in department, hospital, community, and professional activities to meet organizational goals and promote personal and professional growth.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains departmental annual capital and operating budgets, ensuring that operations are managed within established guidelines.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent -(based on Spectrum Health entity), Required or
  • Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology from a recognized university-based program (based on Spectrum Health entity) -Required Or
  • Bachelor's Degree or three years of management experience (based on Spectrum Health entity -Required Or
  • Bachelor's Degree or certification or registration (based on Spectrum Health entity) Required Or
  • Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology or related field (based on Spectrum Health entity) Required
  • Preferred Master's Degree Medical Technology or a health care related field (based on Spectrum Health entity)
  • Preferred Master's Degree (based on Spectrum Health entity)
  • 5 years of relevant experience related technical experience in all areas of general laboratory (based on Spectrum Health entity) Required
  • 3 years of relevant experience management/leadership (based on Spectrum Health entity) Required
  • Technical expertise (based on Spectrum Health entity) Required
  • Demonstrated experience as a Medical Technician (based on Spectrum Health entity) Required
  • Management and/or advanced responsibility (based on Spectrum Health entity) Preferred
  • Three to five years supervisory experience (based on Spectrum Health entity) Preferred
  • 2 years of relevant experience or more laboratory operations management (based on Spectrum Health entity) Preferred
  • CRT-Medical Technologist, Certified (MT) - ASCP American Society for Clinical Pathology Upon Hire Required Or
  • CRT-Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - NCA National Certification Agency
  • Upon Hire Required Or
  • CRT-Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - ASCP American Society for Clinical Pathology Upon Hire Required Or

  • CRT-Diplomate in Laboratory Management (DLM) - ASCP American Society for Clinical Pathology Upon Hire preferred
