King County - Department of Executive Services, Fleet Services Division is looking for an effective and strategic leader to join our highly productive Fleet team. As the Operations Manager you will have the opportunity to manage operations and staff for a large-scale fleet of vehicles and equipment. We are looking for a manager who can effectively lead a team and communicate strategy to staff, labor representatives, and county leadership, and make and justify difficult decisions. If you have the ability to influence culture change and are an experienced leader in fleet, we want to hear from you!
 
 Scope of Job Duties: To be considered for this opportunity, you must at a minimum demonstrate skill and ability to:
 
  • Lead day to day operations of a large-scale fleet including acquisition, assignment, repair and maintenance of vehicles, heavy-duty construction equipment, and the purchasing and warehousing of materials, supplies, safety equipment, hand tools, and traffic signs.
  • Provide professional technical advice and assistance to the Director on best practices in fleet management. 
  • Be an effective leader; build teams, supervise, coach and mentor staff across the organization while ensuring consistent application and compliance with labor contracts and policies; implement best practices for performance improvement and workplace expectations. 
  • Build a culture of continuous improvement by empowering team members to solve problems, see failures as opportunities, and leverage strengths of each team member to build a high performing team delivering results to customers. 
  • Provide professional expertise and guidance in the areas of fleet management, vehicle purchasing and electrification, working in a unionized environment and staying up-to-date on industry changes and best practices.
  • Motivate and inspire a team to align with the King County True North: Making King County a welcoming community where every person can thrive, as well as the Department of Executive Services and Fleet Services Division vision, mission, and values.

  • Are experienced in large-scale Fleet Management OR any combination of education and experience necessary to perform the scope of job duties.
  • Are experienced in positively managing internal and external partners and will follow-through with commitments, action items, and cultivating a cohesive team.

  • Are able to lead a changing culture within an emerging LEAN organization focused on continuous improvement and understands the importance of gathering buy-in from the team. 
  • Be culturally aware and comfortable having complex and challenging discussions about race and diversity in the workplace. Be sensitive to managing differences and building bridges.

ABOUT FLEET SERVICES DIVISON
The Fleet Services Division manages approximately 2,500 fleet vehicles and equipment in an equipment rental and revolving fund. The primary function is the acquisition, maintenance, replacement, and disposal of these assets for the County’s services associated with the Sheriff’s Office, Public Health, Roads, Parks, Wastewater, Water and Land Resources, and other agencies. The division has two primary vehicle and equipment maintenance shops that include robust storerooms of automotive and construction supplies, an administrative presence in downtown Seattle and several technicians working in the field.
 
 In addition, the division is responsible for the disposition of the county’s personal property assets, which includes a surplus warehouse in Georgetown. Disposal methods can include re-use within the county, donation to verified and approved non-profits, and sales via online portals or sealed bids.
 
 The work is accomplished by 75 employees, including light and heavy-duty technicians, storekeepers, and administrative staff.
