Testing:

* Phlebotomy is a heavily invasive procedure requiring the phlebotomist to perform a complex sequence of maneuvers both properly and safely. These diverse procedures include venipunctures, fingersticks, heelsticks, assisting physicians with bone marrow collection, performing template bleeding times and limited bedside laboratory testing including bedside glucose and I-STAT testing. Results of these laboratory tests are recorded and reported in a timely manner while maintaining quality control standards. Duties may include compliance and billing duties as assigned.
* Makes rounds or trips to various on and off campus sites to gather non-laboratory collected specimens and statuses these specimens received in LIS system. Completes specimen processing and aliquoting and delivery of appropriate specimens to proper laboratory section for testing.
* Assumes the duties of coordinating the Specimen Processing area in the absence of the Specimen Processing Supervisor. Assist Specimen Processing Supervisor in coordinating specimen processing to assure timely performance of all phlebotomy procedures.
* Assists with proper collection of urine from subjects for drug screen testing. Must be knowledgeable of requirements regarding urine collection for all the various clients for whom urine drug screen collections are performed.
* Assists in clinical areas with loading and unloading patient samples from instruments and specimen storage and retrieval.

Inventory

* Assists in maintaining department inventory.
* Assists in clinical areas with distributing supplies and assuring adequate supplies needed for patient testing are stocked at instruments.

Education

* Participates in continuing education programs and trains new phlebotomists.

Caring

* Fulfills the responsibilities of this position in a caring manner and interacts with the patients population of neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics

Requirements:

* Must have a valid Mississippi driver=s license and meet the established hospital policy for approved drivers of hospital vehicles.
* It is highly desirable that the person already be trained in phlebotomy and have obtained a 2 year Associate of Arts degree or completed at least two years of college courses.
* Phlebotomy certification by a recognized certification agency is encouraged.
* Employees must be able to demonstrate unique knowledge and skills necessary to care for neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
