Job Description:

STCC is seeking a Career Development Counselor who works collaboratively to facilitate student participants' career planning, employment searching, internship coordination, and job placement. This position is responsible for performing career counseling in an academic environment, including but not limited to career advising, employment searches, interview and placement preparation skills, communication with potential employers, conducting career workshops, and providing orientation to Career Coach and related work as directed.

The College seeks candidates who, through their work and life experiences, service to the community, and teaching and/or research, can contribute to our diversity, inclusivity, and equity goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a direct connection and liaison for students participating in the Male Initiative for Leadership and Education (MILE) program, LEAD: Female Empowerment and Mentoring Program, and TRIO Student Support Services.
  • Assists students in developing/implementing career planning and job searching strategies.
  • Administers/interprets career-related inventories, aptitude, and occupational tests.
  • Performs career advisement for assists students with educational planning.
  • Responsible for developing and delivering workshops on career topics (i.e., career exploration, resume/cover letter writing, job interviewing, job search strategies, networking strategies, Career Coach, and related topics).
  • Meet with students individually and in groups to assist with job search strategies; assesses skills and interests, and customize services to meet the needs of student participants.
  • Provides support and motivation for students entering the job market.
  • Promotes employment opportunities; recruits students/alumni for available jobs; and refers students to specific employers by coordinating placement of students into positions related to the program of study.
  • Coordinates job opportunities with local employers by identifying opportunities directly related to participants' program of study.
  • Develops marketing materials to market career services to students/employers.
  • Maintains accurate, organized student/employer files; compiles statistical data and reports relating to career planning/placement activities; employer information, flyers, brochures, presentations.
  • Interacts with internal and external constituencies to coordinate career-related activities.
  • Provide bi-monthly status reports, including an overview of students served, engagement data, and suggestions for areas requiring improvement.
  • Participate in college, division, and department meetings, events, and training as recommended and approved by supervisor.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, college committees, work groups, task forces, and other professional organizations as approved by supervisor.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those listed above, which do not alter the basic level of the position.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or closely related field; with three (3) years experience and/or training that includes vocational counseling, vocational testing/assessment, vocational referrals, employment services, or career development/transition; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills, as well as public presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Experience serving diverse populations and a demonstrated commitment to equity. 
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain effective communication, collaboration, and meaningful relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Possess a good sense of organizational and time management skills and strong prioritization skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or closely related field.
  • Experience working with and supporting a culturally diverse population in a Hispanic-Serving Institution.
  • Demonstrated abilities to establish and maintain a productive working relationship with multiple internal and external constituencies.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and higher education data software systems.
  • Experience with facilitation and design of presentations, workshops, and/or seminars.
  • Preference is given to candidates with similar backgrounds to populations the program serves (first-generation college, low-income, or have a documented disability).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Works in an office setting. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. The individual needs to move about inside the office to access office machinery. Constantly operates a computer and other equipment i.e. copier.  This person frequently communicates with students, faculty and staff. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.


Additional Information:

Salary: Starting at $52,754 Grade 4 MCCC per annum plus fringe benefits. Starting salary will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. Twelve-month position. 

Position Classification: MCCC Unit Professional Position

Work Schedule: 37.5 hours per week (Monday - Friday).  Requires flexibility to work occasional evenings and/or weekends as demand dictates.

Candidates for employment should be aware that all STCC employees are required to complete Information Awareness Security Training within thirty days of their orientation date and annually thereafter.
