TEACHERS:

SPECIAL EDUCATION

            Education/Certification:  Bachelor Degree from an accredited college or university plus New York State Teacher Certification is required.

              Experience:  Teaching experience with emotionally, socially, and behaviorally challenged students in a non-traditional educational setting is preferred.

  Required Knowledge, Skills & Essential Functions:  Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with clients, families, staff and community contacts with a diversity of backgrounds and life situations.  Capacity to participate in the principles and practices of the interdisciplinary team approach is preferred.  Excellent verbal and written communication, problem solving and organizational skills required. Some working knowledge of computers required.  Must demonstrate an understanding of the academic and behavioral needs of special education students and intervention strategies utilized to assist them in the teaching/learning process.

  Physical Demands/Requirements:  Work is typically performed in a school building/classroom including travel to other on-grounds buildings and off-campus sites as related to the position of Teacher.  Must be able to satisfactorily complete all requirements of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/First Aid/Automated External Defibrillator.  Satisfactory completion of all requirements of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention is preferred. 

 JOB PURPOSE:  Classroom and special area teachers provide direct instruction in assigned curriculum area according to New York State Learning Standards and in conjunction with the individualized strengths and challenges of each student.  In their respective classrooms teachers also provide students with a highly structured, safe therapeutic environment that fosters cognitive, social, emotional and physical growth and allows each student the opportunity to experience success.

1.         Teamwork:  Demonstrate standards of a high performing team member by working collaboratively and cooperatively with various intra and interdepartmental personnel, families and community agency representatives to achieve common goals.

2.         Reports:  Complete required reports and documentation in a timely manner meeting all standards of content and professional presentation.

3.         Behavior Management / Supervision:  Provide direct supervision to students in a safe, positive environment employing behavior management strategies as prescribed by the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention curriculum, individual plans, and Agency policies and procedures; implement incentive systems as designed by specific programs.

4.           Staff Development:  Participate in staff meetings, supervisory meetings and attend trainings and in-service opportunities within the Agency and the community in order to enhance job skills and promote professional growth and development. 

5.         Professionalism:  Role model positive social skills, maintain professional boundaries with students, use sound judgment in making decisions that impact students, coworkers, programs and the Agency.

6.         Instructional Planning & Preparation:  Create necessary planning documents as prescribed by specific program guidelines based upon formal and informal assessment of students’ strengths and challenges in accordance with New York State Learning Standards and Performance Indicators.

7.         Instructional Delivery:  Implement direct instruction through daily lessons in assigned curriculum areas in accordance with the New York State Resource Guide with Core Curriculum for the content area(s).   Ensure the instructional needs of each individual student are met in accordance with the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Accommodation Plan.

8.         Assessment / Evaluation:  Assess, evaluate and record student progress in designated academic and behavioral areas on all required documents.
