Job Summary

The BHSH Health Vice President of Communications and Community Relations reports to the Chief Marketing and Consumer Experience Officer and leads internal and external communications, as well as community relations and partnerships systemwide. This system-level role is categorized as flexible-virtual meaning there is a high degree of flexibility in where you work. Our dual headquarters are in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Southfield (near Detroit), Michigan. You can expect to be on-site up to three days a week.

The VP, Communications and Community Relations works in close collaboration with the VP, System Brand Marketing; the VP, Consumer Experience; and the entire Marketing and Experience leadership team, as well as the Presidents and leadership teams of each of our divisions.

This VP creates and casts a vision and strategy for communications and community relations that advances the mission, vision and values of the system. The scope of this role is significant and includes all external communications (public relations, social media, content generation), all internal communications (employee, physician, leader and board communications) and community relations (partnerships, sponsorships). This role requires exceptional leadership skills including the ability to build relationships that enable collaboration at all levels. Health care is inherently complex so this leader must be able to prioritize, simplify and drive clarity.

This role oversees a team of more than 100 communications professionals. This leader will be passionate about creating and sustaining an exceptional team culture that embraces diversity, equity and inclusion; champions individual and team growth; and lives the organization's values.

Finally, this role requires both passion and experience in communications and community relations for a major organization(s). The successful candidate for this position will have a demonstrated track record of innovating in communication, supporting the building and transformation of organizational culture, using communications to build brands and experience building and protecting a strong reputation in community.

Essential Functions

  • Sets strategy and executes all internal communications and supports the development of organizational culture. In this work, the VP partners extensively with the BHSH System Leadership Team (SLT), Divisional Leadership Teams, Human Resources and the Integration Management Office.
  • Sets strategy and executes all external communications including planned and reactive public relations and social media. This leader is able to translate the objectives for the organization and brands into effective communications. Anticipates communications challenges, prepares effectively for the unexpected, and remains calm and provides clarity in crisis management.
  • Leads a team that builds deep and strong relationships with communities across the state including a thorough understanding of community (locally and statewide), developing strategy, prioritizing and overseeing events and sponsorships.
  • Works with a significant direct team but also in a highly matrixed way with partners within the department (marketing, experience) and beyond. Champions innovation in communications and community relations, seeking news ways to better engage team members, physicians and community.
  • Develops and promotes the reputation of the system on the national level enabling the system to take a leadership role in the transformation of health.
  • Directs investments in communications and community relations, making optimal choices to maximize returns.
  • As a trusted partner to the Chief Marketing and Consumer Experience Officer, the Marketing and Experience leadership team and divisional leadership teams across the system. This role will inspire trust, confidence and collaboration and maintain a high degree of optimism and professionalism.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in communications or similar field of study -Required
  • Preferred Master's Degree in a related field, MBA or similar
  • 15 years of relevant experience progressive experience in communications Required
  • 10 years of relevant experience leading large and complex teams, ideally in a matrixed environment Required
