Summary

The King County Council is looking for an experienced and motivated veteran or active-duty service member of the National Guard or any reserve component of the U.S. military, with a passion for community engagement to reinforce the Council's work on eliminating racial inequities in systems, structures, policies, and practices. The Equity and Social Justice (ESJ) Administrator will organize projects related to the implementation of the Council's ESJ Strategic Plan and provide professional learning opportunities on topics related to equity and social justice, including but not limited to race, socioeconomic status, gender identity and expression, education, age, ability, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, language, nationality, and religion. 
 
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of carrying out equity, diversity, EEO and social justice efforts and is experienced with cultivating and strengthening internal, local, and regional partnerships and participate in thoughtful engagement with our community stakeholders.

Job Duties

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work.  
 
JOB DUTIES
General Administrative

  • Support leadership in the development and implementation of strategies to increase organizational diversity and inclusion initiatives, and the advancement of equity and social justice.
  • Assist staff on the development, deployment and progress measurements of equity and social justice action plans.
  • Manage agency and interagency ESJ projects. Develop project methodology and development.
  • Serve as countywide liaison and coordinator between departments, interbranch committees, advisory boards and commissions and the public on equity and social justice efforts.
  • Provide support for the Legislative Branch ESJ Team and other County ESJ efforts, as approved by Acting ESJ Director.
  • Maintain and ensure confidentiality of sensitive information in all forms, written, verbal and electronic.
  • Work in partnership with the Legislative Records Manager to ensure all ESJ records are properly retained and archived to the County's electronic records management system, Content Manager
  • Monitor the shared drive making sure that archivable files (the “final” subfile) do not have extraneous working files or superseded files and that the subfiles are titled correctly; convert existing ESJ records to digital.
  • Perform administrative duties including but not limited to scheduling appointments, respond to office-related inquiries, compose, and prepare documents, contracts ordinances/motions and other correspondence.

Communication
  • Assist in the identification, development, and maintenance of ESJ communication needs and issues.
  • Draft correspondence or materials for County newsletters, websites, and/or social media utilizing Word, Canva and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Promote community awareness of Council policies, initiatives, and services.
  • Assist in developing and preparing presentation materials for in-person and virtual use. 
Language Access Services
  • Evaluate, monitor, and provide language access needs/services for Limited English Proficient (LEP) clients in accordance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act regarding the delivery of department programs and services.
  • Maintain and manage language access services plan, vendor oversight, and quality control to help promote and improve language access services within the Legislative Branch.
  • Serve as a resource to assist staff in understanding cross-cultural issues and dynamics to ensure cultural competencies by developing and providing outreach and trainings and other engagement opportunities.
  • Serve as liaison on the Language Access Services interbranch team.
 LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  • Learn and implement the Council’s ESJ strategic plan.

  • Attain experience working with and for elected officials and senior managers.

  • Enhance customer service and interpersonal skills, in-person relations, telephone, online meetings, and email etiquette.

Supplemental Information

TEMPORARY TELECOMMUTING REQUIREMENT
The work associated with this position may be performed remotely. It is possible that the work will be primarily performed remotely on an ongoing basis.  Employees will receive a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.  Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.  There will be situations where the employee is required to report to a County worksite.  Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.
 
COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

This position will be scheduled to work 35 - 40 hours/week for one yearnot to exceed a maximum of 2080 hours for the duration of the experience.

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS:
 
COMPENSATION: (Based on highest military rank held OR education level.)
  • Veteran Fellow I - $18.58 - $23.56 - High School graduate; or pursuing BA; or enlisted grade E1 – E3
  • Veteran Fellow II - $20.92 - $26.52 - Possess BA; or pursuing Masters; or enlisted grade E4 – E6
  • Veteran Fellow III - $26.53 - $33.62 - Completed Masters or Officer rank, or enlisted grade E7 – E9
BENEFITS
  •  .025 hours of sick leave accruals for each hour worked

  • All Veteran Fellow participants will work with their supervisor to develop an Individual Development Plan to clarify, regularly discuss, and shape the participant’s fellowship experience for mutual benefit.
  • The Vets 4 HIRE Program Manager facilitates a monthly group meeting with Veteran Fellows to connect with one another, share tips on different topics, and build comradery. Guest speakers will be brought in periodically.
  • Veteran Fellows are encouraged to participate in King County’s Veterans and Military Affinity Group to network with other employees at King County who have served or are currently serving in the National Guard or Reserves.
  • Veteran Fellows are encouraged to participate in King County’s Mentorship Program.
  • The Vets 4 HIRE Program Manager will meet individually with participants to learn more about their career goals and provide one to one coaching on how to effectively apply and interview for positions at King County.
