    Position and Qualifications 

    The Department of Modern Languages includes two separate major programs of study in Spanish and French and courses in Japanese and German. Each of the programs uses an interdisciplinary approach with some shared courses and collaborative teaching based on the common research and teaching interests of faculty members. Hollins University places a high value on interdisciplinarity in its course offerings.

    The ideal candidate will be a committed teacher of Japanese that has experience teaching online. Applicants must be able to teach introduction to Japanese, and depending on enrollment, an intermediate Japanese course. The position carries a course load of one or two courses per semester.

    Candidates must have either a completed an M.A., Ph.D. or A.B.D. in Japanese or a related discipline and be able to demonstrate a clear commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at a liberal arts institution. Beyond the core curriculum, special topics courses are offered in a variety of subfields of statistics, mathematics, computer science, and data science. In addition, faculty work closely with students to explore and develop research projects culminating in a capstone experience.

    We seek a broadly trained individual with expertise in statistics and mathematics (experience in the areas of data science and/or computer science is preferred but not required). The applicant should possess a strong interest in teaching excellence and innovation within a liberal arts institution focused on educating women. We welcome applicants with a Ph.D. (or who are A.B.D. completed by June 30, 2024) in areas focused on statistics, mathematics, or other related disciplines.

    The position carries a teaching load equivalent to six courses per year. The successful candidate must be able to teach introductory statistics (100- and 200-level courses) and upper-level courses in statistics and mathematics. They will have the opportunity to develop special topics courses and will contribute courses to the general education program. Other duties include advising students, supervising capstone projects and internships, and participating in department and university-wide governance.

    Position and Qualifications

    The GPS department includes four separate major programs of study in sociology, religious studies, political science, and international studies and one minor program of study in social justice. Each of the programs uses an interdisciplinary approach with some shared courses and collaborative teaching based on the common research and teaching interests of faculty members. Hollins University places a high value on interdisciplinarity in its course offerings.

    The ideal candidate will be a broadly trained political scientist or public law specialist with related research and teaching interests. Applicants must be able to teach Introduction to American Government, 200-level courses in American government institutions (presidency, Congress, or judiciary, such as Constitutional Law or the U.S. Justice System), as well as related introductory and upper-level electives in American government. Preferred areas of expertise include race, class, and gender; political parties; elections; and controversial issues to complement existing strengths in the department. The ability to advise pre-law students is also preferred.

    The candidate will also be expected to contribute to shared courses in other GPS programs of study and to the Hollins Core Curriculum. Preference will be given to candidates who can also contribute to one or more of the following programs: environmental studies, gender and women’s studies, and/or religious studies. The position carries a teaching load of three courses per semester. Other duties include advising students, conducting independent studies, supervising students doing senior research projects, participating in department and university service, and ongoing scholarly activity in the form of publications and presentations.

    Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements: a Ph.D. in political science or related GPS discipline by June 30, 2024, a demonstrated commitment to contribute to the discipline through active scholarship, and a strong record of teaching at the undergraduate level. Applicants must also demonstrate a clear commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at a liberal arts institution.
