The Center for Game Science seeks a Software Engineer for the development of web-based games to develop a world-wide scale scientific-discovery community centered around neuroscience. At the core of the project is a citizen science game that aims to develop new neuroscience experts capable of quickly reconstructing neural structures. The aim of our project is to speed up the discovery process in neuroscience by a factor of ten.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is responsible for the development of serious games for the Center for Game Science, in service of research projects focusing on learning and scientific discovery.
- Design and implement software for release that is robust, usable, and scalable. Evaluate and select appropriate technologies to support requirements at all levels, including but not limited to networking, server back-end, and user interfaces.
- Work alongside domain experts to ensure the validity of the learning and scientific approaches used in games.
- Organize the release and distribution of games to make them available to the public.
- Maintain and update existing games after their release to the public. Interact with players and respond to their feedback.
- Rapidly develop prototypes of games or other applications for evaluation during projects’ early brainstorm phases.
- Interact with game designers to implement designs. Determine the most effective methods for implementation of high-level designs.
- Work with artists to integrate art into games. Communicate technical requirements for art to be used in games.
- Gather and analyze data from games, including running statistical analyses and creating data visualizations.
- Assist in creation of figures, text, and videos for publications and dissemination.
- Perform related duties as required, including demonstrating games in public settings.

REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field AND 4+ years’ experience programming with object-oriented design, system architecture and design, user interface design and evaluation.
- Demonstrated ability to release quality products on schedule.
- Must have excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work both in an interdisciplinary team and independently.
- Fast turnaround times and ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Ability to multitask and work with multiple teams simultaneously.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE
- Journal or conference publications
- Prior work experience in an academic research setting
- Passion for video games
- Experience in game design
- Strong math skills
- JSON and XML experience
- Proficiency in Actionscript 3, C#, and/or C/C++
- Agile workflow experience
- Flash game development experience
- Mobile phone development experience

Condition of Employment:
Discharge of these responsibilities will require a flexible work schedule. Emergency problem resolution for critical services may occasionally be necessary in evenings or on weekends, particularly around major outreach events or academic publication deadlines.
This position is contingent on adequate funding being available for the Center.
