OVERVIEW

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is seeking an individual with Museum Art Handling experience for an IMLS Art Handler position. The successful candidate will play an integral role in the cataloguing and photography process of all works to be physically moved to and from the Photography Studio with the responsibility of keeping the project on schedule. They will work closely with staff from American Painting Sculpture and Decorative Arts (APSDA), Registration, Conservation and Installation.

This will be a 15-month, full-time, temporary position that will spend 100% of their time in Year 1 and Year 2 on the project from November 2022 to January 2024. This position reports to the Curator of American Art and Department Head, American Painting & Sculpture and Decorative Arts. The successful candidate will report to the Curator of American Art and Department Head of APSDA.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of principles and methodologies of museum preservation.
  • Manual dexterity, and experience in safe handling procedures for sensitive works of art.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across Museum departments.
  • Extensive knowledge of art media to facilitate appropriate handling procedures
  • Extensive knowledge of art museum protocols for security and art movement
  • Ability to climb and work on ladders for extended periods of time, to reach works of art above shoulder level, to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) and to stand or walk for the bulk of the workday.
  • Ability to work on platform lifts
  • Ability to meet deadlines and exhibit clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
