Fellows: Center for the Physics of Biological Function

The Center for the Physics of Biological Function (CPBF), a joint effort between Princeton University and The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, is searching for Center Fellows, both theorists and experimentalists. Fellows will join our highly interactive group, with interests ranging from the dynamics of single molecules to neural computation, and from biochemical and genetic networks to collective behavior and evolution in populations. These diverse efforts are unified by the search for common physical principles underlying the emergence of functional behaviors that are essential for life.

Fellows should be prepared to take advantage of the full collaborative research and mentoring opportunities at the Center, and must have completed their PhDs in a relevant field before starting the position. Appointment will be at Associate Research Scholar rank, for a term of three years; salary will be determined based on experience and qualifications. Appointments will be through the Department of Physics. We expect new Fellows to join us for the Fall semester of 2025; start dates as early as February 2025 are possible.

Bioinformatics Scientist Position in Metagenomics and Evolutionary Genomics

The Bioinformatics Scientist in the Moeller Lab at Princeton University will lead and support projects that employ metagenomics and genomics methods to study the ecology and evolution of microbiomes. The Moeller Lab studies the evolution of relationships between animals and microorganisms, with current work focusing on vertebrates' co-evolutionary histories with bacteria through a combination of -omics approaches, gnotobiotic and microbiology experiments, and natural history. Our group supports researchers with diverse interests in microbiology, ecology, and evolution studying a range of systems, including primates, rodents, lizards, frogs and toads, and birds. We are hoping to attract self-motivated and talented researchers who work well in a team environment.

The successful candidate will work closely with the lab's graduate students and postdocs to develop reproducible bioinformatics workflows for addressing fundamental questions about the ecology and evolution of microbial species within the gut microbiomes of vertebrates. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to develop independent projects in our group.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or similar levels of experience in one or more of these disciplines. Experience handling and analyzing metagenomic and genomic datasets (such as those generating by high-throughput sequencing) as well as experience with scripting in bash, python, and/or R is desired. A background in statistics and/or population genetics is also desired. 

The start date for this position is flexible. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, and benefits are included. The Center for the Study of Democratic Politics serves as Princeton's primary center for studying democratic political processes, behavior, and institutions. The Center brings together a large, vibrant and interdisciplinary community of scholars interested in democratic politics, supports their empirical research, and communicates those findings to inform public policy debates inside and outside the academy.

In concert with the faculty Director(s), the RD helps develop and implements CSDP's academic and policy research programs. They work with CSDP affiliates, including affiliated faculty, researchers (fellows, scholars, and so on), and students. They keep up with and bring to bear research resources and knowledge from across and outside Princeton university.

The RD will help CSDP implement SPIA's strategic priorities, especially data science and policy relevance. The RD will proactively maintain an excellent political science research profile. This includes attending and presenting research at academic conferences, seeking and obtaining ongoing opportunities for one's own professional and technical development as a researcher, and publishing with CSDP affiliates in academic and policy outlets under the direction of the CSDP director(s), all in the service of CSDP's research program. The RD will have some time for their own research as well. 

Areas of responsibility include:
* Design and deliver hands-on workshops on research methods, tools, and applications, including the collection or use of datasets, according to affiliates' needs
* Research and statistical consulting to CSDP affiliates
* Make recommendations for and oversee the selection and implementation of research-relevant software, and monitor its ability to meet the evolving needs of CSDP affiliates
*Oversee a new MPA fellows' program and supervise its fellows including their research activities and their policy-oriented writing

Essential requirements:
-PhD in political science completed by the start date of the appointment
