Job Description

The University of Missouri (MU) seeks applications and nominations for outstanding faculty candidates with a focus on Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research.  This appointment is part of MizzouForward, the most important strategic investment to achieve research excellence and student success in the history of the university.  This initiative will leverage existing institutional strengths and address national health and scientific priority areas through innovation and collaboration.  Successful candidates will have outstanding, competitive, externally funded research programs in any area related to Artificial Intelligence.  Positions are available in all units across campus and joint appointments between multiple departments are possible.

Incoming faculty will build on existing strengths in AI, including world-class cyber resources and interdisciplinary collaborations involving AI applied to important societal and economic problems in healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, neuroscience, and more.  The Center for Cyber Education, Research and Infrastructure (Mizzou CERI) serves as a hub for AI-related research in areas ranging from cyber security, cyber infrastructure, cyber vision and cyber training, with an emphasis on collaborative, interdisciplinary activities that span traditional research/education disciplines including material synthesis and intelligent transportation systems.  Faculty affiliated with the CERI Center are working on multi-institution/multi-disciplinary sponsored research/education projects from federal funding agencies that include: NSF, NIH, USDA, ARL, DOE, NSA, NEH, SBA, DOS, as well as industry and community groups.  Mizzou CERI works closely with the UM System Division of Information Technology’s Research Support Solutions group to support research computing needs of faculty and students including: benchtop instrumentation, sensors, specialized workstations and servers, high performance computing environments and beyond.  Another major resource aligned with this strategic hiring initiative is the University of Missouri Institute for Data Science and Informatics (MUIDSI), which is an interdisciplinary research and graduate education program offering a PhD in Informatics and an MS in Data Science & Analytics.  High-power computing and storage needs will be met by a newly established research data ecosystem, the Hellbender.  Incoming faculty will also have the opportunity to collaborate with research colleagues currently supporting the UM System’s NextGen Precision Health initiative .

Minimum Qualification

An earned terminal degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Agricultural Engineering and other related disciplines

  • Track record of external research funding, particularly from federal agencies
  • Research portfolio and accomplishments (e.g., publication record, number of citations)
  • National awards and honors, membership with national academies

Due to the large number of applications currently in the process, new applications will not be reviewed until later this year, likely the start of the Fall 2024 semester, with interviews following over the course of the 2024-2025 academic year.  Candidates across all academic ranks will be considered. Specific academic home(s) of candidates will be determined throughout the hiring process.
