In this role, the Operations Engineer studies and monitors the transmission system in real-time and near real-time to ensure safe and reliable operation of the transmission system. 

The Operations Engineer will:

  • Build and maintain System Operation’s power system models for the regional transmission system.
  • Perform basic to complex power system studies to develop operating guidelines to support Real-Time Operations, identify power system limitations, optimize network topology, recommend voltage schedules, and support other Otter Tail Power Company efforts.
  • Acquire and maintain a NERC Reliability Coordinator certification. 
  • Perform studies to calculate and analyze parameters used in the energy management system. 
  • Report Otter Tail Power Company engineering information for electric system modeling to MISO, other regional entities and other companies enabling them to adequately model the Otter Tail Power Company transmission system. 
  • Participate and represent Otter Tail Power Company in MISO, the North American Transmission Forum (NATF) and other regional operational planning groups.
  •  Assist in the training of the Power System Operators in the areas of power flows, restoration, and reliability. 
  • Act as subject matter expert for various NERC reliability standards.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • We’re seeking candidates with a wide range of skills who are motivated to deeply understand complex information while aligning with our core values: Integrity, Community, Safety, Resourcefulness, Customer Service and People. Minimum qualifications we’re looking for include:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Computer skills to run applications for power system simulation, write reports, prepare presentations, and perform statistical analysis.  
  • Good oral and written English communications, and technical writing skills.  
  • The ability to make reasonable and logical estimations and assumptions.  
  • Attainment of NERC RC certification within 6 months of hiring. 
  • Driver’s license and able to travel to meetings requiring overnight stays.  
  • Selected candidates will be required to complete a pre-interview assessment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge of the electric transmission and generation system components and how they work within the system.  
  • Working knowledge of power system simulation software, such as PSS/E, PSS/O, TSAT.  Knowledge of the real-time operation of the electric system, operating principles, NERC standards.
