Position Information

Grow your technical experience with the County of Sonoma.
No work experience required!
Starting salary up to $26.06/hour* depending upon experience.

Here at the County of Sonoma, Engineering Aide and Technician positions offer opportunities to gain experience toward career growth in the field of sub-professional engineering. As you gain on-the-job training and experience, you can progress through our career ladders. While all of our sub-professional and professional engineering positions require knowledge of algebra and geometry as well as the ability to accurately enter data, conduct reporting, and track and maintain project records, the County offers various starting points for you to begin exploring your career in civil engineering. As an Engineering Aide - Extra-Help gains experience they may alternately appoint to Engineering Technician I - Extra-Help.

Currently, Sonoma County Public Infrastructure (SoCoPi) is recruiting for temporary, extra-help positions at either the Engineering Aide or Engineering Technician I level. If you are interested in applying at the different levels of this opportunity you must apply to the separate concurrent recruitments being conducted for each level.

SoCoPi leads the way to a safe and sustainable community by planning, building, managing, and maintaining Sonoma County's investment in quality services and infrastructure. Working in the office and out in the field, SoCoPi's Engineering Aide positions support the Construction Contract Administration, Engineering Design, Field Survey Crew, Materials Lab, and Transportation work groups. They learn to perform materials testing and prepare improvement plans, specifications, and estimates. Along with assisting with general maintenance activities on traffic utilities and signal-related items, they also keep written and electronic notes regarding project/site reviews. Successful candidates for the position will possess:

  • The ability to learn to gather and confirm field data, ensure compliance with plans and specifications, and perform PG&E invoice reviews
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and prioritize daily activities
  • Excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with applicants, industry representatives, staff, and other agencies
  • Training and/or experience using drafting software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, etc.
  • A passion for field work, an interest in infrastructure construction and maintenance projects, patience, and a sense of humor to readily accept last-minute assignment changes
EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT

Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.

This recruitment is being conducted to fill temporary, extra-help Engineering Aide positions in SoCoPi, formerly the Transportation and Public Works Department. This employment list may also be used to fill future extra-help positions as they occur during the active status of this list.
