Delivery Driver Job Duties:  Daily duties include the following:

  • Drivers report to transportation office and pickup all designated paperwork.
  • Drivers then hook assigned truck to assigned trailer, verifies load and perform a pre-trip inspection of tractor and trailer.
  • Drivers then drive to assigned customers for deliveries.
  • Upon arriving at designated customer drivers are responsible for unloading pallets of product by means of a manual jack, electric jack, forklift or hand unloading cases onto roller tracks or hand trucks.
  • Upon completing the unloading process drivers are responsible to write up any credits the customer may have to return to Mitchell Grocery and load product, pallets, freezer boxes and any other items to return to Mitchell Grocery back onto the trailer by the same means used to unload (pallet jack, forklift, or manually).
  • In addition, drivers are responsible for pick-up and delivery of backhauls if assigned one to Mitchell Grocery and unhook from trailer at designated location and then complete the post trip inspection of the tractor and trailer then drive tractor bobtailed to fuel island to be fueled. Upon completion of the fueling process of the tractor the driver then parks the tractor at designated location and returns to the transportation office and completes and turns in the end of day paperwork.
  • If the driver does not have a backhaul upon returning to Mitchell Grocery the driver will go to the designated facility for unloading, checking in returned product and credits and clean off and washout of the trailer.
  • Once the clean off process is completed the driver will return to the fuel island for the refueling of the tractor and trailer then complete the post trip inspection of the tractor and trailer.
  • Upon completion of the post trip inspection the driver then unhooks the trailer at designated location and parks the tractor at designated location and returns to the transportation office and completes and turns in the end of day paperwork.
  • Drivers may have multiple loads assigned on a given day.   
  • Drivers are home every day.
  • All drivers are required to use on board electronic logging devices if installed on assigned tractor and working properly. If an electronic logging device is not installed or working properly then the driver is required to use a manual written log.
  • Drivers must update knowledge by attending quarterly safety meetings and practice defensive driving skills. 

Skills and qualifications:  Drivers are required to have a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License, the ability to pass a Department of Transportation physical, and a safe driving record.  A high school diploma or a GED is required.

Drivers must also possess the following skills:  Teamwork, Initiative, Leadership, Customer Service, Listening, Supply Management, Reporting Skills, Verbal Communication, and Written Communication. 

All drivers must have the ability to deal with customers professionally and with courtesy on a daily basis, work independently to accomplish task according to assigned schedules, and be able to work flexible hours including weekends. 

Physical Requirements:  While performing the job of transportation driver, employees will sit for long periods of time during the operation of commercial motor vehicles.  While at delivery points, drivers will be required to walk and stand as needed usually not exceeding over 2 consecutive hours.

Drivers may be required to lift cases ranging from 10 to 80 lbs. while unloading at a customer’s place of business and to push and/or pull fully loaded pallets (1000-2000lbs.) with a manual pallet jack.  In addition, a driver may be required to stack or move empty pallets weighing 50 lbs. or more during unloading and loading procedures.  This requirement depends on the conditions at the customer’s place of business with some stops requiring little or no lifting at all. 

Drivers are instructed to always seek help when the performance of a task risks injury.

Employees working as a driver will be required to work in all types of weather conditions.

Drivers must be able to operate or learn to operate with proficiency industrial equipment including electric pallets jacks and forklifts.
