As a Senior Software Engineer on an Agile development team, you will build, test, and deploy great mid-tier search-related services for our customers. Your team creates information products and services that inform the world, advancing research in emerging clinical fields.
On the Agile development team, you will design, develop, and demonstrate software in one-week iterations. Your team is part of an Agile Release Train that develops in a SAFe Program Increment. You will make commitments to the business and meet those commitments as a team. Continuous improvement in knowledge and productivity are key objectives. You follow a pattern of continual learning and have a desire to broaden your software development and design skills.
What distinguishes a Software Engineer from a Senior Software Engineer?
Based on increased skill, this distinction comes with experience, technical judgment, and the ability to work independently in achieving results. A Software Engineer is a starting point for new or relatively (less than 2 years in the professional world) inexperienced engineers. As Software Engineers develop their skills, they may typically require a high degree of supervision and coaching. Because Software Engineers have not had broad experiences across a number of professional projects, they may have blind spots. They may require mentoring in design areas such as performance, maintainability, or testability.
By comparison, Senior Software Engineers are expected to achieve results independently. Given an objective, a Senior Software Engineer can achieve results without coaching. This engineer will produce code that is stable, robust, and performant. Senior engineers through their professional experiences have a breadth of exposure to many projects and will apply judgment across key areas of their engineering discipline. A senior engineering position may be considered a Career level position. A Software Engineering position is not a career-long position, it is a stepping stone through which an engineer transitions in their career from an initial level of skill and capabilities to the more advanced professional career engineering levels.
