These internship positions will provide you an opportunity work alongside airport professionals in a fast-moving, dynamic environment helping to break down barriers for Equity and Social Justice in your own community and shape this “city within a city” for decades to come.
 
KCIA is recruiting for four (4) college-level interns in a variety of fields. See below for details on each position.

For ALL internships: You must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university and live within a reasonable distance to the King County Airport.
 
Airfield Operations Intern (prior airport management experience encouraged)
Location: Airport Terminal Building with the Operations Team

The responsibilities of the Airfield Operations Intern include performing entry-level airfield oversight and General Aviation duties with the operations team. Specific operational tasks may include inspections, assisting tenants, administrative duties and record keeping, and ongoing education through IET online courses covering part 139 and part 77 subject matter. The internship will help the student apply their academic skills to gain firsthand knowledge of Airport General Aviation and Airfield Operations.  
 
Job Duties 
  • Respond to airfield emergencies with operations 
  • Assist with daily Part 139 airfield inspections and FOD inspections 
  • Assist with wildlife management and mitigation 
  • Project safety and construction oversight 
  • Assist with noise complaint data 
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills 
  • Basic familiarity of aviation and/or airports 
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions 
  • Oral and written communications skills 
  • Ability to use handheld and ground radios 
  • Passionate and willing to work in a team environment 

External Relations / Business Development Undergraduate Intern (prior engineering coursework or equivalent required)
Location: Airport Terminal Building with occasional telecommuting or as required by the King County telecommute mandate and job requirements.  Note: this position is ONLY for the summer.

Through collaboration with the Airport Business Manager, this position will provide hands-on experience working with all the airport partners, both internal and external. This position will be responsible for working with other airport sections to draft messaging for different airport projects, provide ideas for website updates and build metrics to help staff determine the best communication strategies for different users of the airport.

Job Duties
  • Assist with tenant and community outreach for various airport projects
  • Maintain the airport’s database of community organizations and contact information   
  • Assist in developing, modifying, and maintaining planning work order other contracts
  • Build a section SharePoint Site  
  • Work with the section manager to determine section-level performance metrics and document standard work

General Engineering Intern (prior engineering coursework)
 Location: Teleworking and occasionally onsite at the Airport Terminal Building as necessary

Through collaboration with KCIA’s growing team of planners and engineers, you will gain hands-on experience in airfield infrastructure elements including pavement design and construction, environmental remediation, buildings, and utilities (stormwater, sanitary sewer, electrical and communications).
 
This position will be responsible for assisting with and leading aspects of KCIA’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), developing FAA regulatory documentation, assist with construction activities, and update our CAD database and models.  The chosen candidate will work on highly visible public projects and assist with achieving major agency goals. These projects could range from Runway Rehabilitations to Carbon Neutral efforts.   This position will have the opportunity for paid professional development opportunities & trainings, access to public management mentors from within the County and cross-sectional work within the division.
 
Job Duties
  • Assist with obtaining Carbon Neutral accreditation through the Airports Council International (ACI), this includes coordinating with international entities and companies, performing inventories and developing and maintaining a continuous project program
  • Assist with the development of the Asset Management database and project implementation 
  • Assist supervisor in developing, modifying, and maintaining work order contracts, Architecture and Engineering contracts, and other contracts as needed
  • Assist supervisor in reviewing plans, specifications and estimates prepared by consultant team
  • Support KCIA’s Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP) program 
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills 
  • Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Revit 
  • Knowledge of XP SWMM, AutoCAD Storm and Sanitary Analysis, and GIS 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to work independently and in a team setting

Applications & CAD Intern (with prior AutoCAD, Civil3D, Revit, or GIS applications coursework)
Location: Teleworking and occasionally onsite at the Airport Terminal Building as necessary

Summary 
The responsibilities of the Applications & CAD Designer Intern include performing entry-level engineering technical services with direction and guidance from Designer Solutions Analyst and reporting to the Business Information Management Section Manager. Specific engineering tasks may include drafting drawings from notes and sketches, taking field measurements, and assisting with engineering records management. The internship will help the student apply their academic skills to gain firsthand knowledge of airport layout and operations.  

Job Duties
  • Provide basic graphic, drafting and mapping support including field measurements and sketching 
  • Draft engineering drawings from notes and sketches using manual or Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems; update and revise existing drawings 
  • Incorporate markups into drawings under the direction of lead or supervisor 
  • Perform basic research of hardware and equipment and basic mathematical and engineering calculations 
  • Maintain drawing filing supplies and records; prepare drawing sets for internal and external distribution 
  • GIS data collection, field work, and/or projects 
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills 
  • Skill in using computer software such as AutoCAD for measuring and determining distances 
  • Knowledge of basic drafting techniques and principles 
  • Familiarity with map types, Google Earth imagery and street addresses 
  • Graphical detail-oriented skills 
  • Passionate and willing to work in a team environment

Who May Apply: This recruiting effort is for current college students (returning for the 2023-2024 academic year) from an accredited two- or four-year institution.
 
Work Schedule: This is a 40 hour per week position for the summer normally working Monday through Friday, 8 – 5 p.m. and 15-20 hours per week during the school year, except for the External Relations/Business Development Undergraduate Intern which is only through the summer. There may be rare times when after-hours, weekends and/or holidays are required. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible.
