The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) is a national center for advanced science and engineering research and development and education.  APL-UW was formed in 1943 for the U.S.  Navy to bring university research resources to bear on urgent WWII defense problems. APL has an outstanding full time opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist.

Under general direction of the Department Computing Manager, the Senior Computer Specialist will be expected to provide a variety of support, implementation, and design services for directory and identity management solutions; resolves assigned cases for user support and assigned change requests; serves as escalated technician for user support issues; applies new technology solutions through research and collaboration with IT team; spearheads new initiatives; and, implements new software solutions as required by the Laboratory. The position will work closely with the IT team, as well as other staff and expected to provide ongoing communication and status reports of projects and/or troubleshooting issues.

This position will develop and design enterprise level identity management solutions while staying within budgetary limitations, independently engage with and address customer base information technology issues that may include individual operating system failures, research and enterprise wide server failures, etc.

Directory and an identity management issues impact the sum total of APL-UW staff; research based equipment support can impact research grant and contract funding for teams as large as 15-20 within APL-UW as well as collaborating research partners on and off campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Enterprise directory and identity management services architecture/management

Research, develop, test and create Active Directory Server(s), and group policies to aid in the management of user and workstation accounts and systems. The Senior Computer Specialist will be responsible for Identity and Access Management Design, Implementation and Support.

Develop and document enterprise AD architecture, requirements and specifications for specialized and complex systems and AD infrastructure for the department.

Assist in the planning and deploying of new technology and software products related to Identity Management Services, Enterprise AD Migrations, and products such as: Computer Software Distribution, Computer Data Synchronization, Application Integration Support, Integration with Linux Systems, Certificates/Enterprise PKI, Webadmin (AD Administration, Delegation, & Reporting Software, Directory Objects Backup and Recovery, Active Directory Federation Service (ADFS) – Single Sign On Synchronizing Data Sources and applications with different types of data formats including Active Directory.

Provide technical support to ensure optimal design, operation, and maintenance of hardware, software, and performance problems for AD, Identity Management services and access management solutions.

Analyze system performance data and project computer workloads for purposes of capacity planning and management. Assess AD infrastructure on a regular basis to ensure it continues to meet necessary demands.

Design systems and assess the effectiveness of technology resources already in use or new systems that are being implemented to determine the feasibility of changes and modification of systems.

Develop strategic and long-range information systems plans; develop systems for large scale, complex AD Services and Access Management solutions for compatibility with long-range departmental strategies.

Top-level support for departmental and enterprise-wide initiatives

Provide technical support in Active Directory Domain Controller, DNS, DHCP, DFS and Certificates/Enterprise PKI design and implementation.

Resolving escalated issues

Provide on-call assistance as needed

Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or closely-related discipline. Equivalent experience can substitute for degree requirement

  • At least three years IT progressively responsible experience, including experience with Microsoft Identity technologies (e.g., Active Directory, Windows File Services, and Group Policy Objects (GPO))

    Experience must include all of the following:

    Expert-level knowledge:
    -Administering Active Directory (AD) and GPOs
    -DNS, DHCP, DFS, LDAP, Kerberos
    -Scripting language (e.g., PowerShell, Python, or similar)

    Other experience:
    -Virtualization Technologies (e.g., KVM, AWS EC2, Docker, Kubernetes)
    -Cloud technologies (e.g., AWS and Azure)
    -Modern infrastructure, application, and networking principles, concepts, and theories

  • Keen attention to documentation, standards, procedures, and controls

  • Understanding of industry best practices

  • Team player mindset, with strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

  • Self-motivated, attention to detail

  • Ability to identify and establish new standards for quality, performance, and/or productivity

  • Excellent writing and communication skills; ability to maintain open communication with all internal and external contacts

  • Able to receive and apply feedback in a professional manner

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, to include collaborating, mentoring, and training others

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED:

  • Additional years of experience with the technologies specified in the minimum requirements section

  • Working experience of administering Linux servers (Debian/Ubuntu, CentOS)

  • Production experience with configuration management tools such as: Ansible, Puppet, or Chef

  • Experience with Hashicorp Terraform and/or Vault

  • Familiarity with Agile development practices, source code management, testing, and continuous integration

  • Familiarity with visualization and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, ELK)

  • US Department of Defense Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) experience

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    This position will participate in an on-call rotation to provide support and troubleshooting assistance after hours and on weekends as needed.  May need to rack/unrack servers in server room.
