Job Summary
Undergraduate Research Assistant is responsible for assisting a post-doctoral fellow in the synthesis of several small drug-like molecules, purification of small molecules and structural analysis as well as screening of compounds in wild type and mutant mammalian cells to assess their potential effect in rare human disease conditions. The undergraduate researcher is expected to be familiarized with standard organic synthesis procedures, NMR, mass spectrometry, silica gel flash column chromatography and HPLC. In addition to research activities, following are required: Documenting protocols, keeping lab notebook records up-to-date, summarizing results in written format weekly and monthly presentation in support of the research activities. The research activity is intended to provide the opportunity to learn as to how to conduct synthetic organic chemistry procedures and techniques.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience Current enrolment in the undergraduate Chemistry at the Univ. of Utah is essential. Prior experience in synthetic organic chemistry is desirable.

Responsibilities
Typical Duties:

The supervising faculty/post-doctoral fellow who determines the research goals to assist in the preparation for and achievement of the research goals which may include the following and/or other duties specific to the research objectives:

• Organic synthesis of small molecules and purification/characterization.

• Schedules, organizes and reports on status of research activities and update lab notebooks regularly.

• Plans and modifies research techniques, procedures, works closely with post-doctoral fellow.

• Writes and edits materials for ppt presentation and article submission

• Meets with faculty supervisor on regular basis to maintain ongoing communication regarding the progress and performance.

Skills/Abilities:

Subject knowledge and oral/written communication skills to discuss and document research progress. Ability to work independently, accurately and to problem solves technical and methodological issues that arise during the course of the research. Ability to apply sound research techniques, methodology and logical critical analysis. Strong organization and interpersonal skills.
