ONLINE
PRODUCER:
The Spokesman-Review is recruiting a full-time Online Producer for our award-winning newsroom.
This is a true hybrid position –
social media community
management, multimedia producing, content editing, and breaking news. The bottom line – once the dayside web producer and
city desk editors leave, you run the show. You’ll have wide latitude in attracting people to our desktop and mobile sites and helping them find the information they want and need, as well as content they didn’t even know they were
interested in. In addition, you will make some calls on latebreaking
news, in conjunction with the night reporter, and will edit any content that comes in after city desk editors are gone.
The shift is 2-10 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Responsibilities include:
• Coordinate with dayside web producer on plans for rolling
out daily copy online and on social media into the evening and
overnight. Make sure we’re reflecting the diversity of content we
produce on our web/mobile platforms, including stories, blog
posts, photos, videos, and
graphics.
• Embed relevant items into stories, including links, videos or
photographs to enhance presentation and increase time on page.
• Monitor social media and keep up with posting schedules
developed in conjunction with other web producers.
• Make sure we have promos set to go for evening hours and
early the next morning.
• Coordinate with copy desk on posting wire news in the
evening hours.
• Handle breaking news as it happens – deploy the necessary
resources, edit copy produced, and push it out on the web and
social media.
• Add or create live events or “pages” of event coverage.
• Monitor social media for SR mentions and story ideas; interact
appropriately as necessary.
• Monitor story comments for material that violates our terms of
service, but guard against getting drawn too deeply into that; it
could occupy an entire work shift if you let it.
• Help monitor the
news@spokesman
inbox at night
• EXPERIMENT – develop maps or data visualizations, use photos to draw more attention to our content, dip your toe into social
media we’re currently not using. Try new things, always keeping in mind our commitment to accuracy and journalistic ethics.
Requirements and Skills:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or higher preferred; or
combination of education and job experience in the field.
• Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS and the ability to learn
emerging basic coding.
• Expertise with social media,
especially Facebook and Twitter.
• Proficiency in appropriate tools for editing photo, video and audio.
We work in a supportive team
environment and offer a
competitive compensation package which includes medical
benefits, matching 401(k) and paid vacation. Salary to be
negotiated.
Please apply in person between
8:30 am – 3:30 pm at The Spokesman-Review building
at 999 West Riverside Ave. or email
careers@cowlesco.com
with your resume and cover letter.
We are an Equal Opportunity
Employer.
Position open until filled.
