Job Title: Child Care Assistant

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt / Job Code and Grade - Job Code: 355 - Grade: 5

Reports to: Child Care Center Site Director

Overview of Need

Hamilton County Department of Education’s “School Age Child Care Program” (SACC) is seeking qualified and certified Child Care Assistants. The purpose of the SACC Program is to provide adult supervision for students during, before and after-school hours for those students whose parents work outside the home and need this service. 

Purpose of Job

The purpose of this job is to provide supervised care of children enrolled in the SACC Program and to provide a positive environment for the children enrolled in the program.

This is a part-time position with no earned benefits. Hourly rate $15 to $17 per hour.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

∙ Acts in a professional, respectful, courteous and caring manner at all times.  

∙ Creates a customer-focused climate and provides quality services and support to school and other stakeholders. 

∙ Complies with applicable district, state, and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.  

∙ Provides supervised care, monitors children’s activities, and provides a safe, nurturing environment for children enrolled in the School Age Child Care Program before school, after school, during summer vacation, or at other scheduled times. 

∙ Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors areas occupied by children to ensure safety of students, employees, and other individuals; removes any hazards from child care environment; disposes of biohazardous materials per established procedures; reports potentially hazardous or dangerous situations to supervisor. 

∙ Provides care for children; prepares, serves, or provides nutritional snacks; escorts children to/from restroom and monitors restroom activities; assists children in washing hands; assists students with homework; assists in monitoring belongings of children; assists students with tying shoes, putting on jackets, or other clothing activities. 

∙ Plans, coordinates, conducts, and/or participates in various activities for children appropriate to each  age group, which may include indoor/outdoor activities, quiet time, homework, story reading,  educational activities, creative activities, arts and crafts, play time, games, structured physical  activities, exploration activities, field trips, or other activities as appropriate; sets up rooms or other  areas with appropriate equipment or supplies for activities; plans sufficient activities to occupy  attention of children and avoid repetition/boredom. 

∙ Provides care and activities for handicapped children, with appropriate adaptations. ∙ Seeks assistance from the Site Director to address disciplinary issues as required in a fair, equal, and respectful manner; responds to situations involving disruptive behavior, excessive noise, fighting, or other problems; mediates disputes between individuals/groups; administers discipline in accordance with established procedures; reports problems and prepares behavior reports or incident reports as  appropriate. 

∙ Responds to emergency situations; provides first aid or basic medical care to ill/injured children, such as checking temperatures, cleaning wounds, or applying bandages or icepacks; determines need to call emergency personnel; dispenses required medication as directed and completes medication logs; notifies parents of injuries/illnesses; completes accident reports as required. 

∙ Processes various documentation associated with child care activities; checks children into or out of child care each day; conducts roll call; obtains parent signatures on sign-in/out sheets; checks identification and verifies eligibility of unrecognized persons requesting to pick up children; processes notes from parents. 

∙ Travels to other school locations as directed by the area supervisor or site director based on staffing needs and the efficient operation of the child care program.

∙ Communicates through the proper channels to keep supervisor and other appropriate personnel informed of impending problems or events of unusual nature. 

∙ Follows established procedures for ensuring assigned areas are safe.  

∙ Attends required training. Note: Failure to attend required training as specified by supervisor may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment with HCDE. ∙ Provides required documents/checks as required by District, State and Federal law after employment.  This includes but is not limited to: background check and Health Certification Statement. Note: Failure to comply with District, State, and Federal mandates may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment with HCDE.  

∙ Works collaboratively with school staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders. ∙ Attends work and arrives to work on time. 

∙ After initial employment, completes the required background and other checks as required by State and Federal law and/or district protocol. NOTE: Failure to complete required background and other checks may impact continued employment with HCDE. 

∙ Maintains confidentiality. 

∙ Adheres to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities

∙ Monitors inventory levels of supplies and food items; ensures availability of adequate supplies to conduct activities; initiate requests for new/replacement items; purchases groceries, snacks, or other items at local stores as needed. 

∙ Assists with the maintenance of student records: prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, medication logs, accident reports, behavior reports, lesson plans, sign-in/out sheets, roll call charts, attendance records, student assessments, or other documents. 

∙ Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, medication logs, sign-in/out sheets, registration forms, lesson plans, student records, fire drill plan, emergency medical guides, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. 

∙ Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, or other programs; performs basic maintenance of computer system and office equipment, such as backing up data or replacing paper, ink, or toner; coordinates service/repair activities as needed. 

∙ Operates various equipment associated with child care activities, which may include a television, CD player, electronic games or other technology devices, radio, toys, sports paraphernalia, sprinkler, mop bucket, mop, broom, cleaning supplies, mechanic tools, copy machine, laminator, calculator, two-way radio, or telephone.  

∙ Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks, such as picking up toys, cleaning tables, washing dishes, cleaning up spills or bodily fluids, cleaning bathrooms, sweeping/mopping floors, emptying trash containers, or transporting trash to dumpsters. 

∙ Performs opening/closing procedures; unlocks doors/cabinets and turns on lights/equipment; sets up sign-in table. 

∙ Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge/Education/Experience: 

High school diploma or GED required; previous experience in child care or early childhood education preferred; or, any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain valid CPR and First Aid Certification. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

∙ Ability to travel to different locations as assigned.
