Description of Work

A Youth Specialist, under the direct supervision of higher level Juvenile Transition Center personnel and in compliance with the policies and procedures estab­lished by Muskegon County, provides facility security through the performance of required contraband searches and approved disciplinary actions and implements facility programming for delinquent youth being detained at the Muskegon County Juvenile Transition Center.  An employee in this class instructs and strictly supervises the youth in vocational, academic and recreational activities, daily personal hygiene activities and maintains accurate records of the youth's behavior.  Additionally, an employee in this class is responsible for the cleanliness of the building, grounds, equipment and various items used in the facility either by assisting the youth in this work or, on occasion, by completing the work themselves and performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications

Required Experience and Training
1.   Have completed thirty (30) semester hours of college level course work from an accredited college or university (or equivalent quarter hours); OR

Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED); AND
Have a minimum of two (2) years of full-time paid work experience in a juvenile facility or child caring institution as a direct care worker.

2.   Possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
 

Physical Conditions / Work Location

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Employees in this class should be in good physical condition to withstand confrontation with youth, and may be required to move or lift youth weighing in excess of one hundred (100) pounds.
 
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Employees in this class generally work inside and outdoors at the Muskegon County Juvenile Transition Center.

EVALUATION CONTENT

The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment.  An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test.  Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check.  Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

Any applicant is entitled to a review of any determination or action taken by the County regarding the applicant’s employment application.  Inquiries should be directed to the County Human Resources Department.

 

PURPOSE

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system.  For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications.  This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
