Summary


The Department of Public Defense’s Northwest Defenders Division (NDD) and Society of Counsel Representing Accused Persons Division (SCRAPD) are seeking interested applicants for a career service Legal Assistant – Lead. The Legal Assistant – Lead performs a vital role in supporting the work of the department. Legal Assistants handle an array of technical legal office support tasks performed under general supervision, requiring an ability to exercise a moderate degree of independent judgment. Duties require a clear understanding and skill in applying office guidelines, legal procedures, work methods, court rules, and applicable laws. The Legal Assistant Lead has additional duties beyond those of the Legal Assistants.

Who May Apply
This recruitment is open to current NDD and SCRAPD career service Legal Assistants who have successfully passed their initial career service probation. DPD is currently accepting applications to fill one Legal Assistant – Lead position in NDD and  SCRAPD.

Work Location
This position will be located at various NDD and SCRAPD offices in Seattle and Kent.

DPD employees enjoy a flexible, hybrid in-office/telecommute workplace structure, and this role should expect to work both in the office and remotely. DPD maintains physical offices in the following locations:

  • Dexter Horton Building, 710 Second Avenue, Seattle
  • Jefferson Street Building, 1401 East Jefferson, Seattle 
  • Meeker Street Building, 420 West Harrison Street, Kent (SCRAPD)
  • Kent Professional Center, 124 4th Avenue, Kent (NDD)
Rotations of work location can occur based on business need, and placements may be made to any of our Seattle and/or Kent locations.    

Work Schedule
The typical workweek is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay with approval from the supervisor.

Job Duties

In addition to the duties for the Legal Assistant, the Legal Assistant – Lead will: 

  • Assist in workload planning, prioritizing, and assigning work schedules.
  • Cross-train Legal Assistants.
  • Serve as a backup for coverage as needed.
  • Assist with Quality Assurance by running reports in Legal Files upon a supervisor request.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

In addition to the Knowledge/Skills for the Legal Assistant, the Legal Assistant – Lead will: 

  • Have knowledge of each practice area.
  • Skill to perform and teach each piece of a Legal Assistant’s job.
  • Be able to coach and mentor other Legal Assistants.
Education and Experience Requirements
Any combination of education and experience that clearly demonstrates the ability to perform the job duties of the position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to lift/move up to 20-pound boxes
