Summary

Family Ways is a partnership with communities to supporting pregnant, parenting families and children.  There are three specific communities of focus services will be provided to: U.S. born Black/African American, the American Indian/Alaskan Native, and the Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities. The Public Health Nurse will be a consult and resource for team members on health prevention or promotion and conduct care coordination with other team members and referral sources. The Public Health Nurse will also foster strength-based practice with client and families. They will also carry a case load to provide client and family services. Team members will be upheld to Family Ways Guiding Principles: leading with racial equity, respect, participant-centered services with strength-based practice, collaborative decision making, accountability, and continuous improvement in their services and programming. 
 
Competitive candidates will have experience in training and consultation with team members and have experience working closely with individuals and families that identify in with the communities of focus and have experience with client interaction in a variety of settings, including home visits. Candidates can demonstrate effective teaching and coaching skills, collaboration with others and apply communication skills that are inclusive and inviting, especially during difficult situations. Candidate has skills and abilities to lead continuous improvement and quality of services and engage others to contribute to improvements in services and team processes. 
 
This position is situated in the Community Health Services Division in the Parent Child Health Program. Staff may report to work at one or more community-based organizations or county offices as part of their work locations. This is a represented position at 1.0 FTE. Workdays and hours may vary depending on community events, client/family need and staff coverage.  Some weekday evenings and weekend work will be required, as well as the ability to drive and travel to multiple locations throughout King County.



Job Duties

Primary Responsibilities

  • Delegates tasks and collaborates with peer support and other staff in the Family Ways program.
  • Responds to emergency situations with basic life support and first aid skills.  Summons other health care providers and emergency response personnel in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Ensures compliance with practice guidelines, community standards of care, and Federal and State laws and regulations. Ensures a safe working environment by adhering to the standards set by Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Washington Industrial Safety and Health Administration (OSHA/WISHA).
  • Participates in Department and possibly community emergency response training and drills in support of disaster preparedness. Maintains home preparedness to respond in the case of a disaster.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by pursuing education, participating in professional committees and work groups, and contributing to a work environment where continual improvements in practice are pursued.

  • Current Public Health nursing principles and processes
  • Prescribed treatments and medical interventions; ability to effectively monitor and document the patient’s treatment progress and response; ability to refer to appropriate providers as indicated
  • Health care technology, equipment, supplies, and materials needed for medical treatment
  • Chart documentation requirements, medical record forms, State and Federal laws that govern release of health care information, patient consent
  • Population-based health status indicators, determinants of health and illness, factors contributing to health promotion and disease prevention, and factors influencing the use of health services
  • Ability to apply OSHA/WISHA standards and ability to apply these standards
  • Health care systems structure and function; ability to make appropriate client referrals based upon patient need, program guidelines and community resources
  • Current epidemiological data analysis and surveillance methods used in the management of communicable and infectious disease
  • Washington State law relating to nursing care (WAC 18.79), federal health care regulations, Nurse Practice guidelines, Patient Bill of Rights, and clinical practice guidelines for patient care; understanding of community standards
  • Group processes including facilitation, collaboration, negotiation, and conflict resolution
  • Research techniques and principles as well as quality assurance/improvement systems
  • Emergency preparedness—at home, work and in the community and understanding of incident command structure
  • Leadership skills required to delegate tasks, coordinate patient and family care, and mobilize community resources
  • Initiating appropriate emergency response
  • Using a systematic approach to client care that includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, consultation, referral and follow up
  • Maintaining working relationships with diverse populations and cultures; ability to engage clients and families in a care plan
  • Case management: ability to provide option counseling and referral for terminations
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes
  • Using information management systems
  • Skills in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, physical assessment, and basic pharmacology

  • Time management, problem solving, multiple tasking, prioritizing, crisis intervention and medical care coordination. Ability to meet deadlines and be flexible and adjust to changing needs.
  • Skills in identifying and determining response to emergency situations
  • Skills and experience using computer, Microsoft programs (Word, Outlook), electronic health records, video meeting platforms and wide range of audio-visual equipment and programs
  • Knowledge of equity and social justice principles and practices. 
  • Experience working with communities striving to overcome systemic racism.
 

Requirements:
  • Washington State Driver’s License or ability to get to various sites.
  • Current Washington State Registered Nurse license
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing science from an accredited school of nursing
  • CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers

Work Schedule:  The individual selected for this position will have a flexible work schedule typically between the hours 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position is overtime eligible and may work outside of the typical schedule to meet operational needs.

Telecommuting 
The work associated with this position may be performed through teleworking with reporting to an office location and to meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
 
 
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations. King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.
