Salary:  This part-time position will be placed on the College hourly rates scale, grade 4 with minimum starting salary of $17.02 per hour.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing assistance in the College Art Gallery including, but not limited to; ordering and stocking packing materials, packing, and crating artwork for shipment/storage, assisting with installations/de-installations of artwork at the gallery, maintaining safe storage of artwork, working with curator to lay out exhibitions and communicating with artists. The position reports to the Department Chair.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare exhibitions, install and de-install
  • Pack, crate and prepare artwork for shipment and/or storage
  • Maintain safe storage solutions for all artwork on premises
  • Maintenance and upkeep of general gallery and associated areas
  • Build plinths, shelving, cleats etc. as needed
  • Assist installations activities at the gallery, including private viewings and opening receptions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 

  • HS Degree and two years related experience
  • Ability to safely use basic tools (drill, hammer etc.) as well ladders frequently
  • Occasional use of electric saws, lighting equipment, painting lifts etc.
  • Basic understanding of structural needs of gallery walls and ceilings
  • Attention to detail related to inspecting hanging artwork, tools, hanging mechanisms etc.
  • Ability to take direction and work alone with check points from curator

 

Preferred:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts or related field 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work involves physical, on-the-move activity.  Artworks need to be handled and moved around the gallery, often requiring ladder usage, bending, and heavy lifting.   Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:  

  • Hear/talk/communicate – Must be able to exchange information and communicate 
  • Visual Acuity - Ability to perceive or detect surroundings
  • Mental acuity – Able to focus, concentrate, understand, and convey subject matter
  • Repetitive motion (i.e., use of tools)
  • Stand/sit/walk - Able to move or traverse from one area to another

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as art galleries; use of safe workplace practices with tools, ladders or other equipment needed to install/de-install art exhibitions, avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations and College policies. Ability to be flexible to meet shifting deadlines, different personality types with exhibiting artists, and unique display mechanisms for non-traditional artwork.  Estimated hours for this position are 15-20 hours per week.
