Position Summary/Essential Duties:

 

  • Supervises day to day operations of the cancer registry to ensure the productive, management and timely submission of cancer registry data for multiple UH hospitals. Serves as subject matter expert and primary go to person for staff level questions and education.
  • Responsible for quality assurance activities for the Cancer Tumor Registrar.  These activities include, but are not limited to: re-abstracting, random chart review, visual checking, resolving edit checks and coordinating physician review. 
  • Creates reports based on data in the registry in response to requests from physicians and administration
  • Performs duties of a Cancer Tumor Registrar according to the requirements of the American College of Surgeons and the State of Ohio.
  • Directly oversees cancer registry staff members, and is responsible for ensuring their work output is satisfactory. This includes conducting routine staff audits for productivity and tracking results.
  • Communicates productivity standards, performs routine audits and measures employee performance accordingly
  • Leads work flow efforts for cancer registry
  • Responsible for all hiring and related personnel decisions, completing routine performance review evaluations, training, scheduling, and process documentation in collaboration with Manager.
  • Administers employee on-boarding and ensures that team members have access UH applications required for chart abstraction.
  • Meets regularly with direct reports to review accomplishments and set goals.
  • Processes payroll and approves time off requests for direct reports.
  • Acts as a role model for professionalism through appropriate conduct and demeanor at all times.
  • Identifies problem areas and develops plan of action to ensure benchmark standards are obtained and maintained.
  • Maintains knowledge of guidelines and data collection standards including Commission on Cancer, AJCC staging and cancer treatment modalities.
  • Acts as a liaison for all matters related to third-party abstraction software vendor.
  • Communicates directly with the Ohio Department of Health and Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS) as needed to resolve issues or gather information.
  • Analyzes, assists and works with internal and external information technology support to resolve registry software-related issues.
  1. Ensures compliance with accreditation standards, primarily American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer
  2. Participates in and leads departmental meetings.
  3. Responsible for providing feedback, suggestions and process improvement recommendations to manager and above.
  4. Performs duties of a Cancer Tumor Registrar according to the requirements of the American College of Surgeons and the State of Ohio.
  5. Performs and initiates special projects.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Expertise:

Degree in business or allied health background or CTR required

 

Required Credentials, License and/or Certifications:

Certified Tumor Registrar required

 

Experience & Knowledge:

Seven years of cancer registry experience required.
Must have a strong working knowledge of cancer registry database management.
Must be detail-oriented and organized, with good analytical and problem solving ability.
Notable communication, presentation and relationship building skills required.
Ability to function independently and as a team player in a fast-paced environment required.
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
High tolerance level for dealing in a potentially stressful environment.
Excellent knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology required. 
Experience working in a large, academic medical center or multi-hospital health system preferred. Previous supervision experience preferred.
