Summer Math Camp Counselor (Temporary, Part-Time)

The Roanoke Higher Education Center is seeking enthusiastic and energetic summer math camp counselors for a 4-week summer math camp geared toward rising 4th – 6th graders. This position will assist lead instructors with math lessons and implement fun and engaging activities. If hired, you will help campers at all math levels with the concepts being taught and provide a great learning experience for all campers.

This is a temporary, part-time position taking place at the Roanoke Higher Education Center. You must be available to work either mornings or afternoons between the hours of 8:30 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. Training is paid. Rate of pay is $16.00/hour.

Camp dates are July 8th through August 2nd. You must be available to work all four weeks of camp.

As a camp counselor, we expect that you:

  • Have great verbal, listening, and interpersonal skills
  • Are energetic, outgoing, and creative
  • Are organized and can lead students throughout the day in various activities
  • Attend mandatory training workshops prior to the beginning of camp (in June)
  • Partner with your camp staff for scheduling each camp day
  • Keep records of basic student information, course topics, time worked, and other information deemed necessary
  • Other duties as requested

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working toward a degree with coursework in math or education OR equivalent experience
  • Previous experience delivering educational programs in informal and/or formal settings
  • Summer camp counselor experience and first aid training a plus

This is a temporary, part-time position for the summer of 2024. Work hours are based on camp hours and are typically Monday – Friday from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm or 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm. This position is paid on an hourly basis with approximately 25 hours per week and will last for four weeks. No benefits are provided. A background check is required.

Summer Math Camp Instructor (Temporary, Part-Time)

Looking for a fun and rewarding summer job? Are you enthusiastic about math? The Roanoke Higher Education Center is seeking three dynamic and energetic summer math camp lead instructors for a 4-week summer math camp geared toward rising 4th – 6th graders who are seeking a fun way to learn math.

This is a part-time temporary position taking place at the Roanoke Higher Education Center. You must be available to work from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm Monday through Friday and work all four weeks of camp, plus training time. There is a possibility of additional hours not to exceed 29.5 hours per week.

Camp dates are July 8th through August 2nd.

Rate of Pay: $22.00 per hour (Training time is also paid)

As a camp employee, we expect that you:

  • Are available to work all four weeks of camp
  • Attend mandatory training workshops prior to the beginning of camp
  • Have a mathematics degree and/or a teaching certificate preferred
  • Lead a group of campers through a structured curriculum over the camp period
  • Administer pre- and post- assessments of student progress and other surveys as required

As a math camp instructor you:

  • Are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about math
  • Present math content to both individuals and groups in an engaging way
  • Work well with children
  • Lead, teach, supervise, and engage students throughout the camp day
  • Safeguard the physical, emotional, and intellectual safety of camp participants
  • Positively supervise students with kindness, honesty, and empathy
  • Partner with your camp staff for scheduling each camp day
  • Take part in training and staff meetings
  • Keep records of basic student information, course topics, time worked, and other information deemed necessary

Qualifications:

  • Degree in math education (preferred) or a college student majoring in math education
  • Experienced summer math instructor preferred
  • Professional, collaborator, flexible, honest, and patient with campers
  • Must be knowledgeable in Microsoft Outlook
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Great verbal, listening, and interpersonal skills
  • Inclusive and culturally sensitive with students, camp counselors, and coworkers
  • Summer camp counselor experience and first aid training a plus
  • Demonstrate good problem-solving skills, patience, and flexibility

Tutors (Part-Time)

Do you enjoy sharing your knowledge with adult learners who are eager to learn? Are you interested in supplementing your income? Are you looking for a flexible schedule?

Roanoke Higher Education Center (RHEC) is seeking to hire multiple tutors who are skilled at working individually with adult learners. The RHEC houses over 150 degree/certification programs offered by member institutions with a diverse student population. We are looking for dynamic individuals who want to share their passion and skills in the following educational areas:

  • Math
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Reading/Writing
  • ESL
  • History/Social Studies

We are seeking tutors with skill levels ranging from high school through college-level abilities who are comfortable providing tutoring services for both in-person and online students. (There is also a potential for 5th through 12th-grade tutoring.)

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with students to focus on individual needs
  • Craft customized learning programs
  • Proficient in your area of expertise
  • Ability to teach students how to learn in both in-person and online settings
  • Must be able to attend required meetings and training sessions at RHEC

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience tutor, preferably with adult students
  • Confidence, emotional maturity, and stability
  • Professional, collaborator, flexible, honest, patient with students
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Must be proficient in Google applications and web tools related to tutoring
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision

Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related discipline required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Recent teaching or tutoring experience preferred
  • Possession of a current Virginia teaching license OR certified by a national tutoring and/or reading association preferred

Hiring Range: $20-$25 /hour (based on experience and education)

These are 1099 independent contractor positions with flexible hours dependent on student class schedules. Tutors must perform tutoring services at the Roanoke Higher Education Center.
