ATTENTION:

The UW-Whitewater Foundation in the division of University Relations at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a Director of Finance, (Advancement Services Director, AV020).

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working as a member of the senior leadership team at the Foundation. The Director of Finance has direct working relationships with the University and Foundation Board and its committees. An excellent opportunity for a candidate who enjoys working with a small collaborative team on a day-to-day basis to support the Foundation's mission.  And has the added benefit of working on a high energy college campus!

Academic staff positions are provided fixed term appointments with annual renewals unless otherwise noted. Reappointment for subsequent terms is dependent upon performance, university funding and external forces.

JOB DETAILS:

The Director of Finance is responsible for all financial aspects of the UW-Whitewater Foundation and its subsidiary, Warhawk Real Estate Foundation, LLC, independent fundraising arms of the University.  This leadership position is responsible for financial operations including: financial and accounting policies, tax filing, regulatory requirements, financial budgeting, forecasting and modeling, investment of assets and endowment fund management. The Director of Finance will bring to the position an analytical perspective that will enable the unit to set a standard for efficiency and effective financial management needs of the Foundation.   As a member of the senior leadership team, the Director is an active participant with other senior leaders and the Foundation Board in setting the strategic direction of the organization. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field
  • Professional certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
  • Five years of progressively responsible financial management experience, ideally with experience in foundation or nonprofit accounting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting software, corporate principals, and financial analysis
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office products

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) or another masters-level degree with a concentration in finance or economics
  • Experience in Blackbaud products (Financial Edge, Raiser’s Edge, Raiser’s Edge NXT)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • An analytical mind with good organizational skills
  • Outstanding leadership skills

  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Financial and Accounting Management:

  • Oversees accounting to ensure that revenue and expenditures are managed and recorded and financial statements are prepared in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA), as adopted by the state of Wisconsin
  • Prepares monthly financial statements and other management reports and analysis in support of the financial management of the organization
  • Work with Foundation Accountant and Chief Operating Officer, to ensure cash disbursement operations remain in compliance with policies, reconciliations are completed and expenditures are accurately recorded. Provide leadership to ensure processes have strong internal controls
  • Acts as staff support for the Foundation Board Audit & Investment Committee, including meeting and event facilitation, regular member communication, report preparation and presentation of financial information and other financial reports, as needed, for the Foundation Board and its committees.  Serves as the Foundation liaison to outside investment advisors for Foundation endowment and other assets.  With the Audit & Investment committee, ensures regular assessment of investment advisors, Investment Policy Statement and compliance with its asset allocation and spending policy
  • Prepares an annual budget for the Foundation with input from Foundation leaders and University stakeholders and monitors and reports on performance
  • Prepares data for Foundation annual report, using Financial Edge, Raiser’s Edge and Raiser’s Edge NXT systems
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for external auditors to complete an annual audit and in preparation of the Foundation’s consolidated and audited financial statements.  Facilitates action plans required to address operational weaknesses cited by the auditors
  • Manages endowment funds, working capital, credit lines and cash assets under the policies, guidelines, and performance benchmarks established by the Foundation and its Board
  • Ensures that all required federal and state tax and regulatory filings are completed accurately and on a timely basis
  • Manages financial policies to ensure they are maintained with strong internal controls, communicated and complied with by Foundation personnel
  • Assumes additional projects or other duties as assigned

Strategy:

  • Participates in strategic planning, providing financial analysis and projections, decision-making and input for the development and implementation of organizational objectives and goals
  • Supports the monitoring and reporting of key metrics supporting organizational performance goals
  • Engages with Vice Chancellor, Foundation Board leadership, Executive Directors, Major Gift Officers, the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Alumni Relations Officer, and additional University leadership to align financial management with short- and long-term financial planning
  • Participates and supports the Warhawk Real Estate Foundation Board in its management of real estate-related activities

Team Management:

  • Directly responsible for management of the Foundation Accountant and assigned work
  • Collaborates with Foundation leadership to ensure strong internal financial management and address questions or concerns about any financial systems, processes or transactions
  • When applicable, may manage additional resources such as student or temporary and project help

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $80,000-$120,000 commensurate with the candidate’s education, related experience, and qualifications.

Additionally, this position offers a hybrid work option and business casual dress. The incumbent will be available until early December to assist in training and knowledge transfer.
