Application Deadline: 1/20/2017 2:00 PM Pacific DEFINITION Under general direction to perform journeyman level maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on diesel vehicles, trucks, and other automotive equipment; and to do related work as required. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS · Maintains, repairs and overhauls a variety of automotive equipment (CNG, gas and diesel),including buses, trucks, and passenger cars. · Removes, repairs, overhauls and replaces brake systems, clutches, transmissions, differential assemblies and hydraulic systems. · Repairs and overhauls pumps, valves, piping systems, tanks, and similar accessory equipment. · Repairs, adjusts, cleans and replaces carburetors. · Maintains and replaces lighting circuits and auxiliary actuating circuits. · Repairs and replaces alternators. · Repairs, adjusts and replaces ignition systems. · Machines brake drums and rotors. · Replaces and adjusts braking systems. · Replaces fuel pumps and repairs and replaces speedometers. · Operates shop equipment and machine tools such as pedestal grinders, power hack saws, drill presses, general diagnostic testers, and other shop equipment in connection with maintenance, repair and overhaul work. · Performs general troubleshooting duties. · May provide technical supervision to other personnel involved in automotive repair and maintenance. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS · Performs other related work as required. · Inspects CNG tanks at prescribed intervals. LICENSE REQUIREMENT Incumbents must maintain the following: A valid, appropriate California Driver's License; a valid, California Class B Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement. Must qualify for and maintain qualification for insurance coverage by the district's insurance carrier. California certification as a School Bus Driver is desirable. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: General and specialized methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment (CNG, gas and diesel), including buses, trucks, automobiles, tractors, sweepers, mowers, and other powered grounds equipment; School bus safety inspections; General automotive industry safety practices. Ability to: Provide technical supervision to other automotive personnel; Instruct and demonstrate advanced mechanical skills and techniques to others; Locate and diagnose mechanical defects and malfunctions in automotive equipment; Perform highly skilled automotive maintenance and repair work; Make time and material cost estimates; Maintain accurate records; Issue, understand, and follow oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; Work with a minimum of supervision; Read and comprehend handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various equipment and machines; Communicate effectively; Meet minimum physical requirements as prescribed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles; Stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk; Kneel or squat for extended periods of time; Climb slopes, stairs, steps, ramps and ladders; Lift, carry, push and pull heavy to very heavy objects, such as automotive parts weighing approximately 100 lbs., or heavy industrial tools; Perform strenuous manual labor for varying duration as needed; Work on more than one task at a time; Work at various elevated heights in a safe and effective manner; Work in restricted spaces in a safe and effective manner; Work in a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions (garage bay is open to weather, and subject to exhaust fumes, engine heat, noise, dust and movement of heavy equipment); Work with a variety of chemical agents and other automotive-related substances and products in a safe and effective manner; Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to perform fine maintenance procedures and operate both manual and power tools in a safe and effective manner; Operate a variety of industrial vehicles, equipment and tools associated with maintenance and repair of various types of engines (CNG, gasoline and diesel) and motor vehicles in a safe and effective manner; Maintain regular, steady attendance. Experience: Minimum five years experience with automotive, truck, and small engine repairs including CNG and diesel engines is desirable. Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Personal Qualities: Highly motivated, reliable, and dependable.
