Job Summary:

The Licensed Midwife/Certified Nurse Midwife will be responsible for providing obstetrical antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum patient care within the scope and standards of care, the diagnosis of illness and physical conditions, and performance of therapeutic, corrective, and prescriptive measures of the designated patient population.  The obstetrical services will include routine and high risk prenatal and postpartum care, vaginal deliveries, and circumcisions.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs complete health history, physical examination and psychosocial assessment of patients within the designated practice or clinical unit.
  • Performs inpatient admission and discharges, vaginal deliveries, inpatient rounds, obstetrical triages, and newborn circumcisions.
  • Orders customary laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies per practice protocols, and differentiates between normal/abnormal findings and follows protocols for abnormal findings, which may include referral to consulting physicians.
  • Formulates the plan of care along with the collaborating physician, the patient, and their family, based on expected goals of care and length of stay.
  • Works collaboratively with the consulting physician(s), residents, and other disciplines to identify, develop, and implement an appropriate plan of care that maximizes individual patient/family preference and enhances quality, access, and cost-effective outcomes.
  • Prescribes medications according to New York State law, including controlled substances (with DEA authorization).
  • Prescribes medical equipment, devices, physical and occupational therapy, and home health services per practice protocol.
  • Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and bylaws, as outlined in the delineation of privileges at Upstate University Hospital.
  • Evaluates treatment and health care plans for effectiveness and modifies per clinical standards and practice protocols.
  • Educates patient and family to facilitate and promote healthy adjustment to new or changed health patterns.
  • Acts as a professional role model to all levels of staff by incorporating expertise and related experience into all aspects of patient care.
  • Plans and organizes care to meet individual patient needs and to ensure appropriate clinical resource utilization per protocols, pathways, and other means.
  • Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team including the attending physician and residents to develop and implement the therapeutic plan of care for a group of patients and ensure communication with family members.
  • Helps to educate medical students in all aspects of patient care pertaining to women. Position will also have shifts on Labor & Delivery floor in Crouse Hospital.
Minimum Qualifications:

Current New York State licensed Midwife and may be either a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) or a Certified Midwife (CM). Is certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) and is an active member of the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) or National Association of Professional Midwives. Master's Degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, Business or Administration preferred. Current CPR certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross is required. At least five years of clinical nursing practice in the care of the patient population served, two years in gynecology. Must have NPI number and be Medicare Enrolled with Medicare Identification Number (or PTAN) OR be eligible for Medicare Enrollment within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

Position will work primarily with high risk obstetric patients at the Regional Perinatal Center as part of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division. Experience with this patient population is preferred, but willing to train the right candidate. Epic EMR experience preferred.

Work Days:

Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with occasional weekends & holidays
