Summary

This recruitment is open continuous; first consideration will be provided to those who apply before March 9, 2021.

This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for these positions are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substance testing program protocols.

Job Summary
This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair and upgrades of Light Rail operating facilities, supporting systems and equipment. Responsibilities also include the coordination and oversight of the work performed by outside contractors working in an assortment of crafts and engaged in a variety of building and systems maintenance, repair and enhancement. 

WAGE NOTE: Day Shift: $28.39 to $40.55. Second Shift: $29.81 to $42.58. Third Shift: $30.52 to $43.59.

Link Light Rail
Metro Transit's Rail Division is responsible for operating and maintaining Link Light Rail service on a 20.4-mile route from the Angle Lake Station south of Sea-Tac Airport to the University of Washington Station, expanding to Northgate in early 2021. Plans and/or construction are underway extending the system to the north, east, south, and west.  Expansion over the next five years alone will include the addition of more than 20 stations and 40 miles of light rail track.  The light rail line is a critical part of the region's transportation network and carries more than 79,000 weekday daily riders.

Work Schedule
This position is paid on an hourly (non-exempt) basis and is therefore eligible for overtime pay if scheduled. The work week and scheduled hours may vary. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift (day, swing or graveyard). This position will initially work the day/night shift with a 4/10 or 5/8 schedule during the training period. Work shift is subject to change based on seniority bid system and needs of the business. In addition, this position has on-call responsibilities and must respond to emergency situations as needed.

Job Duties

  • Maintain all public and operating facilities, equipment and associated components under the management of Light Rail including maintaining and repairing a variety of plumbing, HVAC, tool, vehicle wash, tunnel and associated systems and equipment.
  • Perform a variety of preventive maintenance functions and service checks on facilities, buildings and equipment; develop specifications for and purchase new equipment and materials.
  • Maintain and repair Fire & Life Safety Systems including sprinklers, Pre-Action systems and standpipes.
  • Perform a variety of plumbing, carpentry and related building trades work; read, interpret and apply blueprints and other drawings; maintain work records and complete work requests.
  • Install, maintain, repair and modify equipment and system assemblies; install, attach or brace appurtenances to buildings, walls, ceilings, doors, door hardware/locks and floors.
  • Design, layout and fabricate various metal components, parts or fixtures used in the repair, maintenance and modification of facilities, buildings and equipment; perform shop and field welding, layout, cutting and fitting; operate a variety of welding and burning equipment.
  • Coordinate activities and work with other trades, divisions and outside agencies and contractors; inspect work completed by contractors.
  • Perform testing of backflow devices; perform lock and security system maintenance, repair and modification.
  • Setup work zone traffic control areas; flag track way to provide safe rail work zones.
  • Assist other trades as necessary; operate company assigned vehicles; perform snow and ice removal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS: 
Ideal candidates will have:

  • Completion of an apprenticeship, training or vocational school program (or equivalent training or experience)
  • At least three years of journey-level work experience in the Fire & Life Safety Systems, plumbing, welding, and/or mechanical fields, or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of advanced mechanical theory and current practices
  • Knowledge of related national, state and local codes and means of compliance
  • Knowledge of standard construction practices and principles of building systems and industrial controls
  • Knowledge of and compliance with applicable safety standards and requirements
  • Skill in maintaining mechanical equipment
  • Skill in efficiently utilizing appropriate tools and equipment
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints and drawings
  • Skill in reviewing and coordinating the work of others
  • Skill in establishing, maintaining and encouraging cooperative and equitable working relationships with a diverse group of individuals
