Job Classification: Skilled Maintenance Worker

DEFINITION:
Under general supervision of the MOT Supervisor, to perform skilled work in one or more of the maintenance trades in the alterations, repair, overhaul, and occasional new construction of equipment and structures; and to do other work as required.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
The duties listed below are typical of the positions in this class collectively, but no one position would normally include all of these duties. Incumbents must be thoroughly skilled in one or more trades and are expected to perform duties of a semi-skilled or unskilled in other trades.

Carpentry: Alters, repairs, or constructs articles and structures of wood, such as room additions, partitions, counters, doors, window frames, sheds, and forms; makes and repairs school and office furniture and wooden fixtures, performing mill and cabinet work as necessary; maintains and repairs woodwork of buildings; repairs floors and roofs, including work with hardwood, asphalt tile, and other composition materials; fits doors, windows, sashes, and screens; operates sanders, planers, jointers, band saws, skill saws, table saws, routers, and other woodworking machinery.

Painting: Uses brush, roller, and conventional and airless spray equipment in applying paint, varnish and other protective or decorative finishes to various surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, plaster, stucco, wallboard, brick, and cement; scrapes, sands, fills, or in other manner prepares surfaces for painting or repainting; applies under a finish coats; sizes and tints plaster walls and other surfaces.

Electrical: Installs, maintains, and makes repairs to motors, bells, clocks, lighting circuits, electrical control equipment, transformers, conduit and duct systems, and other types of electrical lighting and power equipment; checks circuits and performs electrical repair of refrigerating, heating, and ventilating equipment.

Heating and Ventilation: Installs, maintains, repairs, and rebuilds gas heating and ventilating units, space heaters, furnaces, and refrigerated air conditioning systems.

Plumbing: Installs water piping, tap water, and sewer mains and laterals; repairs and replaces pipes, valves, fittings, ball-cocks, and other fixtures; packs faucets; wipes and flushes joints; cleans out drains and obstructions in water and sewer systems.

Locksmith: Installs, repairs, and changes lock and lock combinations; designs and installs master key systems and maintains records and controls on keys; repairs lockers and combination locks; orders locks, key blanks, pins, and related supplies.

General: Forms, mixes, pours and finishes concrete and mortar in the construction, alteration, and repair of sidewalks, catch basins, drains, and retaining walls; performs gas and electric welding; installs glass, Plexiglas and similar materials in windows, doors and interior surfaces; marks outline on pattern and cuts material, breaking off excess; installs metal frames into which glass or plastic materials are to be fitted.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:
· standard methods, materials, practices, tools, and equipment used in one or more of the skilled maintenance trades;
· safe work practices.

Ability to:
· demonstrate journeyman-level skill in one or more of the maintenance trades;
· learn to perform tasks in other trade areas;
· use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely;
· work from sketches and blueprints;
· do shop math;
· keep work records;
· follow oral and written instructions;
· drive automotive equipment safely and in accordance with traffic laws;
· work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work;
· establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties;
· Perform minor maintenance and repair of all district vehicles;

Education, Training, and Experience:
· Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
· One year of journeyman level experience in one or more of the maintenance trades. (To be qualified as a journeyman, one must have completed four years of rounded training and experience, usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.)

License Required:
· Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Strength: Heavy work-lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling 100 pounds minimum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
