Generation Specialist

American Municipal Power Inc., (AMP) is seeking applicants for the position of generation specialist. This position will work under the supervision of the director of generation optimization and reporting, and has the opportunity to report to work in Belleville W. Va., Cincinnati, Columbus or Fremont, Ohio. The generation specialist will provide assistance and oversite of instrumentation, control systems and electrical equipment for a power generation fleet including combined cycle plants, hydroelectric facilities, simple cycle gas turbines, reciprocating engines, wind turbines and photovoltaic solar fields.

Basic Function:

Provide assistance and oversite of instrumentation, control systems, and electrical equipment for a power generation fleet including combined cycle plant, hydroelectric facilities, simple cycle gas turbines, reciprocating engines, wind turbines, and photovoltaic solar fields.

Essential Functions:

1. Analyze operation and maintenance problems and troubleshoot issues at all generating plants to determine effective solutions.

2. Supports all generating plants control systems including hardware and software upgrades and process changes.

3. Solves problems associated with the design, configuration, integration and implementation of process control solutions including batch software, DCS systems, HMI packages, and oversees the application of those control solutions.

4. Provides Plant data archiving expertise to assist in troubleshooting issues and modifying or adding new archiving points in systems such as OSI PI.

5. Conceives, develops, designs and/or implements improvements at all AMP generation locations and oversees application of same to problems with generating operations.

6. Assists in performing the analysis of equipment performance data and trends to develop, optimize and implement measurable programs to obtain lowest heat rates and life cycle costs at all AMP generation facilities. 

7. Provides support to extract data, develop reports, and verify set-points through various control systems to ensure regulatory requirements are met including NERC and applicable environmental requirements.

8. Manages multiple related tasks identified by the Director of Generation Optimization and Reporting or Senior Management.

9. Performs all assignments and duties in a manner to meet or exceed corporate objectives, with high accuracy and attention to detail.

10. Interacts and cooperates with other departments on supporting operation and maintenance of various systems including IT/IS and environmental services.

11. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of a valid operator’s license.

12. Ability and willingness to travel to all AMP generation locations as required, which may be extensive.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:

1. Must have a minimum of a two (2) year technical degree and a minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in the power generation industry or equivalent energy industry, including prior experience in a equipment analysis, or maintenance–related role.  Other combinations of skills, education and experience may be accepted upon review and approval by AMP.

2. Must have the ability to perform the duties of the position with little or no supervision and with good judgment.  Must be a self-starter, with experience and skill in team-oriented environment.

3. Must demonstrate the ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems with little supervision. 

4. Must have extensive experience with DCS, PLC control systems and HMI software.

5. Knowledgeable with protection relays and switchyard operations and able to work within high voltage environments preferred.

6. Must have good oral and written communication skills.
