Description of Work

A Solid Waste Disposal Site Operator performs a variety of skilled operational and maintenance duties related to solid waste.   An employee in this class is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the landfill site, performs maintenance on assigned equipment, assists employees in other divisions during peak periods or emergencies, and performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications

1.    Be a high school graduate or have successfully completed the General Educational Development Test (GED); AND Have a minimum of two (2) years full-time experience in operating and maintaining a wide variety of equipment, such as scrapers, excavators, loaders, graders, compactors, skid steers, tracked dozers, off-road dump trucks, and hook/cable hoist waste trucks; OR 

Have a minimum of four (4) years full-time experience in operating and maintaining a wide variety of equipment, such as scrapers, excavators, loaders, graders, compactors, skid steers, tracked dozers, off-road dump trucks, and hook/cable hoist waste trucks; OR    

Have been employed by the County landfill full-time for a minimum of three (3) years and have successfully completed the County landfill heavy equipment training.

2.    Required experience must be within the past eight (8) years. 

3.    Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Michigan Driver License within 30 days of employment.

4.    Must possess a valid Class A Michigan CDL or be able to obtain a Michigan Class A CDL within six (6) months of hire to complete the probationary period, and as a condition of continued employment. 

Physical Conditions / Work Location

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

An employee in this class must be in good physical condition, such to allow for medium to heavy work activity requiring the lifting and carrying of objects weighing in excess of fifty (50) pounds and for pulling, pushing, kneeling and climbing for extended periods of time.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

An employee in this class generally performs work activities on the grounds of the Muskegon County Solid Waste Site.

EVALUATION CONTENT
The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment.  An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test.  Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check.  Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system.  For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications.  This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
