Gettysburg Municipal Authority is seeking a Full-Time Water Treatment Operator.

This position will work under the supervision of the Water Production Superintendent and will assist in all phases and perform a variety of duties to assure the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a 3.1 MGD conventional gravity filtration plant with Superpulsator clarifiers, chemical addition, along with 6 production ground wells. 

Qualifications include a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and a current PA DEP water Operators license Class B, E including subclasses 1, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, or the ability to obtain the required Operators license within a reasonable determined amount of time by the Utilities Manager.  Knowledge of maintenance, electrical, instrumentation, and process control skills are a plus. The applicant needs to possess strong computer skills with knowledge and high aptitude of MS Word, Excel and ability to learn internal software programs. Applicant must also possess the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds, perform work in all weather conditions, provide stable employment, attendance, and pass a complete background investigation (including references, employment, criminal, driving, and pre-employment drug screening test). Weekends and holidays are required on a rotating basis as well as emergency call-outs with a response time of less than one hour.

Water Operator

This is skilled, technical work in the operation and maintenance of GMA’s water treatment facilities.  Work is full-time and may vary including evenings and weekends. 

An employee in this class may perform a variety of duties requiring strenuous physical effort and exposure to uncomfortable working conditions.  Examples of job responsibilities include water treatment plant and well operation, water sample collection and testing, and plant and well maintenance.

This position is full time work (40 hours per week) with benefits as outlined in the GMA’s Policy Manual.  Work may be performed during regular business hours, and/or at all other times as may be necessary to ensure the safety and quality of GMA’s potable water supply.

Work is performed under the direction of the Water Operations Supervisor.

DUTIES:

Operation of GMA’s water system, including all equipment associated with the water treatment plant and wells (valves, pumping of raw and finished water, chemical addition, operation of equipment, and interpretation of charts, gauges, and meters).
Water sampling and testing as required to meet state, federal, and operational requirements and make necessary process changes as indicated by testing.
Ensure safe storage and handling of all chemicals, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, such as respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as needed.
Under the direction of the Water Operations Supervisor, complete and submit all reporting and maintain all records required to ensure GMA’s compliance with state and federal regulations and to ensure a quality water supply for GMA customers.
Maintain plant and well operating equipment, and laboratory equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
Respond to plant alarms 24/7.
Take necessary training courses needed to obtain and/or maintain appropriate State Operator Certification.
Follow safety procedures and OSHA safety standards relating to all duties of Water Operators.
Ensure operator access to plant, wells, and tanks at all times of the year.
Keep supervisor informed regarding plant and well operations and/or problems.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and basic algebra.
Mechanical aptitude with knowledge of hand tools, plumbing procedures, and construction tools.
Capable of medium to heavy physical work including lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and reaching.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision.
Become proficient in all DUTIES as defined above within 18 months of this classification with the capability of making minor operational decisions and performing duties alone without constant supervision.
Become knowledgeable and proficient with the following within 18 months of this classification:
Safe Drinking Water Act.
State and federal regulations and reporting requirements.
Safety procedures and OSHA safety standards relating to all duties of Water Operators.
Basic maintenance of pumps and electrical motors.
Ability to identify problems and provide oversight, as required, for repairs.
Piping, control systems, chemistry, and bacteriology as related to GMA’s water system.
Operation of the SCADA system.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Take the necessary training courses needed to obtain a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Water Treatment Operators Certification within 18 months of this classification.
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license.
Basic computer hardware and software skills.
