Summary

Public Health – Seattle and King County is seeking Peer Navigation Specialist Lead for the new Family Ways Program.
 
Family Ways is a partnership program with King County Public Health and King County communities to support pregnant and parenting families and their children. This position will report to the Family Ways Program Manager.  This program will serve 3 specific focus communities: The Black/African American, the American Indian/Alaskan Native, and the Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities. The Peer Navigation Specialist Lead will be a consultant and trainer for Peer Navigation Specialists and other Family Ways staff; and will focus on supporting staff in their individual work and learning. The Peer Navigation Specialist Lead will support and foster an effective team environment with other disciplines, and foster strengths-based practice. They will also carry their own case load to provide client and family services. All team members will be expected to support and incorporate the Family Ways Guiding Principles:

Competitive candidates will have experience in program development, training curriculum development, and program and team consultation. Candidates should also have experience in working closely and collaboratively with individuals and families that are members of one or more of the 3 focus communities, have experience with client interaction in a variety of settings (including home/field visits), and be comfortable accompanying participants and families to appointments. Applicants should have demonstrated effective experience in teaching and coaching, collaboration with others, and strong communication skills that are inclusive and inviting, especially in difficult situations. Competitive candidates will need to have experience in and the ability to lead continuous improvement efforts.
 
This position and the Family Ways program is part of the Parent Child Health section in the Community Health Services Division (CHS). Staff may report to work at one or more community-based organizations or county offices as part of their work locations.

Work Schedule: This position will work full-time, 40 hours per week, and is overtime eligible. Workdays and hours may vary depending on community events, participants needs, and staff coverage.  Some weekday evenings and weekend work will be required, as well as the ability to drive and travel to multiple locations throughout King County.

Job Duties

  • The Peer Navigation Specialist Lead will:
    • Support the design and implementation of educational programs and trainings for the Family Ways program staff and participants.
    • Maintain quality assurance for the Family Ways program practice and services.
    • Develop and promote educational materials and information that are accurate, culturally appropriate, and educationally sound.
    • Collaborate with King County communities and the CHS staff to assess program needs and further develop the program.
    • Assist in policy development.
    • Gather and assemble data for program assessment, development, monitoring, and evaluation.
    • Assist in developing resources for the Family Ways program.
    • Develop and implement engagement strategies to ensure community involvement.
 
  • Direct care and coordination
    • Partner with participants and families to develop care plan, which may include support and navigation of social and health systems and connections to community resources 
    • Conduct educational and informational learning for staff, program participants, community groups and other professionals.
    • Respond to calls, emails, or requests in a timely manner. 
    • Promote accurate and culturally appropriate educational materials, and information.
    • Collaborate with Family Ways participants, community organizations, and county programs to support access to services and referrals.
    • Collaborate and coordinate with community partners to plan and attend community events. 
    • Assist with identifying education needs for Family Ways participants, families, and other County staff. 
    • Conduct or arrange for culturally relevant and linguistically appropriate presentations for specific audiences.
    • Maintain and update a library of training and reference materials.
    • Gather and assemble data for presentations.
 
  • Partnership and Community Engagement
    • Assist with development and implementation processes to ensure community involvement.
    • Foster relationships with community-based organizations 
    • Develop and coordinate community events.
    • Support expanding partnerships and program participation. 
    • Collaborate and coordinate with other county programs and community-based organizations to advance racial equity and social justice. This may include active participation in development of racial equity and anti-racism trainings or curriculum.
 
  • Leadership as a Peer Navigation Specialist Lead
    • Actively engage and consult with team members on program goals and objectives. 
    • Be aware and conscious of budgetary and operating conditions for the program. 
    • Develop and assist with participant-centered, strengths-based practices. 
    • Apply trauma informed and healing-centered principles to the work of Family Ways. 
    • Prioritize racial equity and social justice in collaborative work with the Best Starts for Kids team, CHS, and other County programs.
    • Work collaboratively with the evaluation team and electronic medical record support staff. 
    • Collaborate and share decision making with team members fostering and creating and environment for authentic and respectful dialogue and participation.
    • Be an active collaborator in fostering a culture of continuous quality improvement in the workplace.
 
  • Other Duties as Assigned: 
    • Perform other related duties as assigned. 
    • Staff may be required to play an active role in the event of a public health emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities, work locations, and working hours.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Knowledge of:
    • Theories and practices in health and well-being promotion 
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in curriculum development, education program planning, implementation, and evaluation
    • Training principles, teaching methods and presentation techniques
    • Data analysis and research methods
  • Knowledge of communication methods:
    • Culturally relevant and versatile communication and program promotion techniques
    • Effective social media engagement with staff and community partners
  • Knowledge of effective communication skills which includes:
    • Consultation with workplace teams and community partners
    • Communicating information to a wide variety of audiences
    • Conducting individual or group presentations and trainings
    • Understanding group process and facilitation methods
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills
    • Skill in interpersonal communication and facilitation
  • Skill in program planning and implementation
  • Skill in community collaboration and partnerships
  • Experience using computers, Microsoft programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.), electronic health records, video meeting platforms
 
Licensing, Certification and Other Requirements

Temporary Telecommuting Requirement
Some of the work associated with this position will be performed remotely, at least through July 5, 2021, in compliance with King County’s telecommuting mandate.  Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.  Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.  There will be situations where the employee is required to report to a County worksite.  Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.
