Supervision:
  • Coordinates work flow of phlebotomists in Specimen Processing area
  • Serves as Charge Medical Technologist (MT) in absence of supervisor or Lead MT
Distribution and Transportation:
  • Assures accurate and efficient transportation of lab-related supplies, equipment and specimens
  • Follows all laws and regulations in the processing and transportation of laboratory specimens
Specimen Handling & Processing:
  • Follows regulatory guidelines in handling/processing of laboratory specimens.
  • Follows proper policy for accurate patient identification and labeling of all specimens
Communication:
  • Effectively communicate with all NMHS staff, patients, their family members and customers
Customer Service
  • Uses AIDET as applicable
  • Attends CARES training.
  • When necessary, assures proper service recovery is done for patients and/or caregivers.
  • Answers telephone in an polite and efficient manner
Employee Relations:
  • Works as part of a team with all Pathology and NMHS employees
Reporting/Recordkeeping:
  • Assures department testing, applicable to their area, is reported in an accurate and timely manner
  • Assists with meeting goals of department Performance Improvement initiatives
  • Assures appropriate documentation of all required instrument monthly maintenance and quality control
Education:
  • Assists with training of students and new employees
  • Participates in continuing education programs to maintain and expand skills
  • Stays abreast of regulatory changes
Regulation:
  • Adheres to NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines
  • Complies with appropriate Local/State/Federal policies/procedures/guideline/regulations/laws/statues
Adheres to College of American Pathologist (CAP) & Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI)
standards

Job Knowledge:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological Science or related field; required
  • ASCP Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, required within 12 months after incumbent's graduation form an accredited Medical Technology Program. NOTE: If ASCP certification has recently lapsed, employee will have 90 days to complete continuing education and recertification requirements.
  • Valid Mississippi Driver's License and acceptable driving record/history; preferred
  • Proficient skills with LIS; required
  • Good organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills; required
Knowledge of and appropriate handling of biohazardous specimens; required
