Located in the scenic Northeast, the City of Portland is the population, financial and cultural center of the State of Maine. The Portland Police Department, the largest municipal police department in the State of Maine, has an annual operating budget of almost $14 million with 225 employees, of which 163 are sworn staff and 62 are civilians. The Portland Police Department is comprised of the Uniformed Operations Group (Patrol Division, Community Services, Traffic, Island Services, Homeland Security), Criminal Investigations Division, Administration and Emergency Communications.

The City of Portland operates under a Council-Manager form of government with a nine-member City Council and popularly elected Mayor. The City Manager oversees the day to day operations of the City and is responsible to the City Council for administration of all departments including the Police Department. The Police Chief reports directly to the City Manager.

Candidates must possess unquestioned integrity, a thorough knowledge of modern police administration and proven management and leadership skills. Candidates must have demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining effective relationships with public safety partners, various municipal departments, the business community and diverse citizens groups.

Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration or related field; and ten (10+) years of progressively responsible command experience with at least three (3+) years of upper level command experience in an organization presenting comparable complexity and challenges. Experience in a union setting is required. A Master's Degree is preferred and completion of a nationally recognized advanced law enforcement administration course is a plus. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Candidates must be able to meet the state's standards for certification by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

Salary range $112,378 - $134,179 Depends on Qualification plus competitive benefits package. Relocation assistance may be provided.

A select number of candidates may be invited by the Police Chief Search Committee to participate in an assessment center process. A conditional offer of employment would be subject to a thorough background investigation including a job suitability assessment.
