Job Description:

Structural Engineer

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, those listed below:

  • Coordinates structural projects including hull structure scantling design and reassessments, equipment foundation design, boom truss design, etc
  • Ability to breakdown complex structural problems into solvable structural solutions that can be solved by hand or through Excel spreadsheets
  • Performs ship and shipyard visits as needed
  • Prepares structural drawings, calculations and technical specifications
  • Prepares cost estimates
  • Provides engineering support during construction
  • Reviews completed work to ensure accuracy and compliance with codes and design data
  • Supervises, trains and mentors other team members
  • Develops alternate solutions to existing problems. Performs all detail work necessary to determine best solutions

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
  • 5 years+ experience with structural design including detailed calculations
  • Professional Engineer's License a plus (or willingness to obtain)
  • Steel design experience per AISC, aluminum design experience a plus
  • Possesses strong knowledge of structural design methods and standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Been the lead engineer on at least one fully completed project.
  • Basic experience using AutoCAD. Strong AutoCAD experience a plus
  • Finite Element Analysis experience a plus
  • RISA3D experience a plus
  • 3D modeling experience a plus.
  • Always exercises sound judgment in assessing problem situations or complex issues
  • Understands the proposal process and can lead the preparation and review of fee proposals, as required
  • Able to perform Independent technical reviews of design effort by others
  • Fully understands and utilizes the capabilities, applications, and operations of computer software associated with design assignments and provides direction and guidance to others
  • Continually upgrades technical knowledge and capabilities, and pursues additional coursework and training
  • Complies with the company’s safety awareness program, office and/or field safety policies
  • Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required
  • 10+ years' experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in technical and operational aspects of marine vessels a plus
  • Demonstrated knowledge of USCG regulations, ABS rules, transportation industry standards, and structural engineering standards for marine vessels a plus

Time commitment:

  • 40 hours per week minimum
  • Work time over 40 hours per week is paid at time and a half
  • Core office hours are from 9 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday, including a 1 hour lunch break. Outside of core hours, employees may utilize a schedule that is flexible to their needs. In the summer (between Memorial and Labor Day) BEI follows a reduced core hour schedule on Fridays where employees may conclude their work-week at noon. This allows everyone more time to enjoy beautiful Door County, where there is a lot one can do in the summer.
  • BEI has eight (8) paid holidays: Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving & day after Thanksgiving, 4th of July, Labor Day and Memorial Day. There is also one (1) floating holiday, which is a paid day off to be used at the employee’s discretion. We also provide employees with 24 hours of paid personal/sick leave each calendar year (this does not accumulate from year to year).
  • In addition to personal leave and the floating holiday, you would be eligible for 2 week’s paid vacation per year, starting your first year of employment. An additional week of annual vacation is obtained after 5 years of employment.

Compensation:

  • $32.00 - $35.00 per hour (based on experience)
  • Annual bonus (at discretion of management)
