Summary: 

Under the supervision of a Pharmacist, performs a wide variety of duties in the delivery of pharmaceutical care in the specialty pharmacies (i.e. the Pediatric Pharmacy, Critical Care Pharmacy, and Oncology Pharmacy) and inpatient pharmacy. Along with other staff, delivers medication related services to in-house patients, and the related take home medication services. Assists Pharmacists in performing quality control procedures for drug distribution technologies. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System.

 

 

Responsibilities:

1. Mixes solutions (i.e. intravenous (IV) additive, parenteral nutritional, chemotherapy, other specialty solutions) by using aseptic techniques in a laminar flow hood, as required.


2. Performs routine calculations and preliminary pharmaceutical calculations unique to specialty pharmacy area(s).


3. Prepares medications for dispensing.


4. Delivers medications to units.


5. Returns unused medications to the pharmacy.


6. Replenishes/delivers emergency drug boxes, specialty drug boxes, and controlled substances, as directed.


7. Sets up and operates automated compounders during the preparation of parenteral nutrition solutions.


8. Maintains/operates/replenishes/performs quality checks on/performs basic trouble-shooting procedures for automated tablet/capsule dispensing machines, and patient care unit-based dispensing machines.


9. Replaces floor stock.


10. Replenishes patient medication bins, and accurately matches doses to patient medication bins.


11. Performs quality control activities, as assigned.


12. Maintains records of drug distribution activities.


13. Maintains necessary inventory levels in assigned work areas by accurately/cost-effectively ordering and restocking shelves with pharmaceuticals/related materials.


14. Performs monthly medication storage inspections.


15. Cleans and maintains all equipment/work areas in a matter that is consistent with infection control/other related health care standards.


16. Keeps current with trends, developments, and practices in the field as they relate to this work assignment.


17. Incorporates principles of teamwork in the resolution, completion, and follow-up of responsibilities.


18. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications:

Required:
HS Diploma or passage of a high school equivalency exam.
18 years of age or older with no felony convictions, per Ohio Revised Code 4729.42.
Meets one of the following:
• Current/active Certified Pharmacy Technician from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), OR obtains certification within 90 days of hire; maintains certification throughout the course of employment.
• Possess an Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) Certification from the National Healthcareer Association.
Meets one of the following:
• Currently registered as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy; maintains active registration throughout the course of employment.
• Currently registered as a Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy, AND becomes a registered Certified Pharmacy Technician within 90 days of hire; maintains active registration throughout the course of employment.
Willing and able to travel to external satellite locations, including having access to reliable transportation.
Possess a current/valid driver’s license.

Preferred:
Experience preparing sterile intravenous (IV) products.
6 months of experience in an inpatient pharmacy, with unit dose and IV admixture services.
1 year of experience in a retail pharmacy setting.
1 year of experience in a Home Care or Long Term Care Pharmacy setting.

Physical Requirements:
May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the day.
May need to sit or stand for extended periods.
See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Finger dexterity to operate office equipment required.
May need to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds on occasion.
Ability to communicate in face-to-face, phone, email, and other communications.
Ability to see computer monitor and departmental documents.
Requires some exposure to biohazardous chemicals.
