The Town of Cheshire, Massachusetts is seeking a qualified individual to fill an Equipment Operator/General Laborer position for the Highway Department. This position performs semi-skilled manual work in the operation of the Highway Department under the supervision of the Highway Superintendent or another supervisor. This position operates a wide variety of equipment such as hand and power tools, performs masonry, carpentry, painting, fabricating and welding work. The successful applicant will also operate a variety of trucks on a daily basis and for snow operations. The position assists in Highway Department projects and may be required to perform functions of other Highway Department operators. Applicant must be willing to work overtime hours during the winter months or during times of emergency on short notice and as required. Applicant must possess a High School diploma or equivalent plus work-related experience demonstrating the ability to perform outlined activities or any combination of education and experience. Applicant should have a working knowledge of public works equipment operation and basic mechanics as well as the ability to perform heavy manual labor under exposure to varying weather conditions. The successful candidate must possess prior snow plowing experience and mechanical experience is preferred. Possession of a Massachusetts Commercial Class B motor vehicle license is required by the date of hire. A Massachusetts Hoisting Engineers licenses in classes 2A & 4G are also required as a condition of employment and must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
