Summary

The Department of Local Services (DLS), Road Services Division (Roads) is looking for two candidates for the Environmental Scientist I role in the Environmental Unit (EU). The EU provides scientific, technical, and regulatory support for Roads' capital improvement (CIP) projects, maintenance programs, and maintenance facilities. These positions are Seasonal Short-Term Temporary (STT) positions that are not to exceed 1040 hours. The positions will support the EU's diverse workload by providing maintenance support, environmental data collection, and analysis for ongoing mitigation sites and capital improvement projects. The work will primarily require field activities (90%) with office time (10%) associated with data compilation, analysis, and reporting. This position is open to all qualified applicants.

Job Duties
  • Assist with maintenance, monitoring, data processing, and documentation of Roads' mitigation sites. This work includes the following tasks:
  • Identification, reporting, and safe removal of noxious and invasive weeds using physical removal control methods.
  • Vegetation surveys in upland, riparian, and wetland areas.
  • Beaver activity monitoring and maintenance of beaver exclusion structures.
  • Planting native trees and shrubs.
  • Minnow trapping to monitor fish habitat use and fish presence absence.
  • Safely drive King County vehicles to job sites.
  • Accomplish job duties with an equity mindset.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Basic knowledge of western Washington environmental issues and ecology, including native and invasive plant identification.
  • Skilled in non-native and invasive plant species management and removal techniques.
  • Knowledge of environmental monitoring approaches.
  • Skilled in on-site inspection, field notetaking, and data management.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in harsh field conditions, often in inclement weather.
  • Comfortable working in and around moving and deep water.
  • Skilled in researching, analyzing, and interpreting technical data and performing basic statistical analysis.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting engineering plans, specifications, drawings and technical maps, and documents.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and mapping software (ArcGIS).
  • Ability to work independently on specific tasks/projects/programs, as assigned and under tight deadlines.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in multi-disciplinary/diverse team environments, resolve conflicts, and make team decisions.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's of Science degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, or any other related field.
  • Knowledge of western Washington wildlife, wetland mitigation and management, and aquatic habitat restoration techniques.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • A final offer of employment will be contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment physical. (Provided and scheduled by King County).
  • Possession of a valid Washington State Driver's license prior to employment.
  • Must be able to safely manage yourself in and around moving and deep water.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires the ability to perform extensive field work in occasionally difficult conditions, including walking on uneven terrain and in slippery conditions; walking through mucky, brushy or densely forested sites; working in and around streams, rivers, and wetlands; and carrying up to 40 pounds of field equipment. Long hours (10+ hour days) are occasionally needed for field work. Fieldwork will sometimes involve working in remote locations and during all weather.
